2026-27 Clarkson University Golf Preview

With possibly the largest roster in program history, the Clarkson University Golf team will have plenty of qualifying battles throughout the year as the Golden Knights look to improve upon a 2025-26 campaign in which the squad won three tournaments.

Led by head coach Tyler Cline and assistant Aaron Walsh, the Golden Knights have nine solid returners and eight promising newcomers for a full roster of 17 student-athletes. Each should compete at the local tournaments, while the travel squad will be limited to a scoring five as well as potentially some individuals. The season opens at the annual St. Lawrence Invitational, a tournament that the Knights won in 2025, on September 5-6.

The lone departing senior for the Green and Gold happens to be Walsh, who returns as the graduate assistant coach this year. However, Walsh isn't the only loss to the team as Ryan Makowski is still recovering from an injury suffered last winter with hopes of possibly playing at the tail end of the fall. Makowski has routinely been among the Knights' top golfers his first three years, including a 76.92 scoring average last fall which saw him win the SLU Invitational.

Though Makowski may be on the shelf for a bit, the Knights return the remainder of their spring scoring five, led by seniors Eric Spoth, Joe Tiderencel, and Luke Weisiger. Spoth is a two-time Liberty League All-Star and has one of the lowest scoring averages in program history at 75.95 strokes per round, something accomplished in just under 60 competitive rounds. Last year was his best showing yet at 75.68 strokes per 18 which included 13 rounds under 75. Weisiger also played in each tournament last year, scoring 77.23 strokes per 18 with nine rounds under 75, while Tiderencel averaged 79.63 strokes over 19 competitive rounds. Junior Tyler Yacawych had the best showing at the Liberty League Championships, scoring 73/73/71 over three days to tie for eighth in the field. His 76.14 strokes per round ranked second behind Spoth thanks to 12 rounds below 75. Filling in for Makowski in the spring was junior Brian Secor, who was in his first season with the program as a sophomore in 2025-26. Secor showed well, averaging 78.94 strokes over 16 rounds from the fall to the spring.

Alex Sweeney (80.50), Jace Dutch (82.50), and Vincent Magee (84.25) showed flashes in their limited tournament opportunities, and could challenge for spots as the season wears on.

Clarkson also brought in a significant first-year class that has talent from top to bottom, including Mario Alvarez Carreras, Tyler Burchett, Nate Cencetti, Sam DuPont, Ty Lefebvre, Sam Schultz, Bryce Terborgh, and Joey Walsh.
