Ballston Spa, NY - After plenty of impressive rounds in both the fall and spring, the Clarkson University Golf team uncharacteristically struggled on the first day of the Tim Brown Invitational, held at the par-71 Ballston Spa Golf Course.

The Golden Knights had their worst round of the year by far scoring a 331 to put themselves in 17th out of 17 teams through the first 18 holes of the annual invitational hosted by Skidmore College. The team looks to regroup in its second round on Sunday morning.

Sometimes one or possibly two golfers will find difficulty in any round, but all five of Clarkson's golfers finished in the 80s, all of which have rarely scored so high. Eric Spoth shot 43 on the back nine but came back strong to finish with a 39 on the front and close his first round with a score of 82, recording a birdie on the eighth hole on the front nine. Joe Tiderencel similarly shot 82 with a 43 on the back and then 39 on the front, recording his birdie on the third hole. Those two placed in a tie for 70th among the field of 96 golfers.

Luke Weisiger had the low score on the back nine with a 39, including a birdie on 16, but closed out his round with a 44 on the front to finish with an 83, putting him in 78th place. Tyler Yacawych opened his day with a 45, but like Spoth and Tiderencel, was able to salvage his round with a 39 on the front nine, also picking up a birdie on the third hole, to end with a round of 84, placing him 85th. Brian Secor's round of 87 was dropped from the team score, as he shot 43 on the back and then 44 on the front. He sits in 94th place at the halfway point of the tournament.
