Knights Record Sixth Straight Win with 6-1 Victory Over Providence

Potsdam, NY – Sara Manness scored a pair of goals and Jessie Pellerin assisted on three scores, helping the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team gain a 6-1 win over Providence Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights picked up their sixth straight win to improve to 8-2 on the year, while the Friars fell to 3-5. Clarkson begins ECAC play next weekend when the team travels to New England for games against Harvard and Dartmouth.

Though Clarkson had a dominant first period in which it outshot Providence 17-4 in terms of shots on goal and 29-11 overall, the Golden Knights were able to come away with only a 1-0 lead prior to the first intermission. That goal came early in the period, as the Knights scored just five minutes into the contest.

A turnover in the neutral zone off an attempted clear by the Friars resulted in a transition goal the other way, as Layla Matthews stepped in to collect the loose puck and sent a pass to Isabelle Goettl, and her shot went in at the far post at the 5:06 mark.

Clarkson pulled away with three goals in the middle stanza, keeping the Friars from putting a single shot on frame (21-0 shots on goal) and producing a 30-8 edge in total shots while also scoring three times. The first of those goals came less than three minutes in after a couple of strong pushes by the Knights' offense finally found the back of the net. Clarkson regrouped after a scrum with Morgan Walton putting the puck on goal. Mallory Hartl made the initial stop for the Friars, but Raedyn Spademan was there for the rebound. Her first try did not make it past Hartl, but she stuck with the play and was able to knock in her second attempt at 2:54.

Barely a minute later, the Knights tallied again when Jessie Pellerin sent a pass into the neutral zone and quickly created a 2-on-2 the other way. Manon Le Scodan went into the zone with the puck and drew the defenders towards her, dropping off the puck to Sara Manness as a trailer and giving her plenty of space for a shot and goal at 4:10 to make it 3-0.

Late in the period with the two teams skating 4-on-4, the Knights utilized the extra space to create another goal in transition, starting with Kate Manness behind the net. She passed the puck to Pellerin near the Clarkson blue line and one more pass through the neutral zone found Sara Manness just short of the Providence blue line. It was all Sara Manness from there as she got past the Friars defense and went forehand five-hole at 19:55, just as the penalties had expired.

Providence got on the board early on in the third period as Audrey Knapp scored for the second time on the weekend. Her first shot from the top of the slot was sent away by a skate, but Knapp skated down low to pick up the loose puck. She then cycled around the outside and regained the puck after passing it off to Mirella Martinelli, picking her spot from the middle of the slot and going to the right post at 6:05 to make it 4-1.

The third period was much closer in terms of shots on goal, but that was the only score for Providence while the Knights put the game away with two insurance goals in the final eight minutes. The Friars were whistled for a penalty with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest and Clarkson scored less than 10 seconds into the power play. The Knights won the faceoff and Sara Manness got the puck near the right circle. She waited for space to create and sent a pass through the slot, finding Janelle Evans for a one-timer at the bottom of the left circle at 12:02. The final goal came late when Kate Manness pinned the puck against the boards with her skate as she was without a stick. When she thought she had a chance to get the puck out, she kicked it along the boards to create offense going the other direction. Jessie Pellerin went deep into the zone and came back out when the rest of the Knights had found their spots, and she located Kaitlyn Mallette for a one-timer at 19:23, her first goal as a Golden Knight.

Clarkson enjoyed a 79-34 overall advantage in total shots and a significant 49-12 edge in shots on goal. The Knights scored once on the power play in five tries while the Friars were 0-for-1. Kalia Pharand recorded 11 saves for the win and Mallory Hartl had 43 on the Providence end.
