Loudonville, NY – Sunday's late start at Shaker Ridge Country Club did not treat the Clarkson University Golf team kindly, as many of the Golden Knights had their roughest rounds of the fall on the first day of the RPI Invitational.

At the halfway point of the two-day tournament, the Golden Knights find themselves in 12th place out of 14 teams, 34 strokes over par with a score of 318, 23 behind the two-way leaders of Swarthmore College (295) and Rensselaer (295). Though coming all the way back to win the tournament would be a tall order with only 18 holes remaining, a solid Monday showing could put Clarkson in the top half of teams.

The course was played slightly shorter for tournament play at par-71, 6837 yards. Junior Eric Spoth was the lone Clarkson player to tame Shaker Ridge on Sunday, shooting a two-over par 73 with a 38 on the front and a 35 on the back, putting him in a tie for sixth among the 80 golfers. He notched birdies on the third and fifth holes of the front nine and then also had two birdies in a three-hole stretch on the back, scoring a three on nuber-11 and a four on number-13. His only sullied mark on the back nine was a double bogey on the 16th hole, but he was still even for that stretch.

Spoth was an outlier for the Knights as the only Clarkson player to shoot in the 70s. Sophomore Tyler Yacawych had a birdie on the second hole and finished with an 80 to tie for 48th in the tournament. Junior Luke Weisiger also posted a birdie on the second hole and scored an 81 to put him in a tie for 53rd. Classmate Ryan Makowski picked up a birdie on number-five, but he struggled in his first handful of holes to put him in a deep hole early. Makowski finished with an 84, but did score 39 over his last nine holes, tying him for 67th. Joe Tiderencel's score of 85 was dropped from the team tally. The junior had five pars on his scorecard, putting him in a tie for 71st.
