Clarkson Looks to Take Windjammer Classic Title

After a tough weekend road trip to the southern reaches of ECAC Hockey, Clarkson will make a much shorter journey this weekend for non-league action in Burlington, VT at the Windjammer Classic. The Golden Knights will open the tournament against Minnesota State of the WCHA at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Gutterson Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Vermont. Host UVM, from Hockey East, and Penn State of College Hockey America will face off in Friday's second game at 4:00 p.m. The first-round winners will then meet up in the tournament championship game on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Consolation game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday.

Guided by 12th-year Head Coach Matt Desrosiers and assistants Britni Smith and Tony Maci, Clarkson is ranked 6/7th in the national polls with a 10-2-4 overall record. The Green and Gold are in fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 3-1-2 league mark. Clarkson, which was playing with a depleted lineup due to injuries, is coming off a one-point weekend on the road. The Knights, skating just nine forwards and missing all-star defenseman, Captain Ella Shelton, dropped a 2-1 decision at nationally-ranked Princeton on Friday, followed by a 2-2 tie at Quinnipiac on Saturday.

The Knights close out the first semester hosting league rivals Rensselaer and Union at Cheel Arena on December 6-7. Clarkson opens the New Year at Yale and Brown on January 10-11.

• This will be Clarkson's second appearance at the Windjammer Classic. The Golden Knights won the 2016 tournament title after tying Robert Morris 3-3 ot (advancing on a shootout win) and defeating host Vermont 3-1 on November 25-26, 2016.
• The Golden Knights will be playing Minnesota State for the first time in their 17-year Division I history.  Clarkson, which faced Lindenwood for the first time earlier this season (Oct. 25-26) will have played 31 of the other 34 Division I programs since the 2003-04 season.  The Knights have yet to play Holy Cross, Merrimack and St. Cloud.
• Offensively and defensively, the Green and Gold are ranked 11th in the NCAA. The Knights are averaging 3.19 goals per game, while allowing 1.81 GPG.
•Clarkson's leading scorer, Elizabeth Giguere ranks 7th in the nation in points per game (1.69). The Junior right wing has tallied 15 goals and 12 assists through 16 games. A two-time All-American, Giguere has amassed 171 career points (68-103) in 97 games. She has a current 11-game point streak with 12 goals and nine assists since October 19.
• Left wing Gabrielle David leads the nation's rookie in points with 22 including a NCAA-high 16 assists for freshmen.  She is tied for second among the nation's rookies in plus/minus at +14.
• Senior center Michaela Pejzlova has 17 points (6-11). Fifth on the Knights' all-time scoring charts, Pejzlova has amassed 159 points (62-97) in 134 games and is just three assists shy of 100.
• Sophomore Marie-Pier Coulombe ranks among the nation's best goaltenders with a 1.38 GAA (5th) and a .941 save percentage (5th) en route to an 8-2-3 record, the most wins by any ECAC Hockey goaltender. 
• Clarkson is 5-1-2 in both Friday and Saturday games.
• The Knights are 8-0-1 when leading through two periods.
• Clarkson is 5-1-4 in one-goal games, suffering its first close loss in last Friday's 2-1 defeat at Princeton.
• The Knights have scored four-or-more goals eight times this season, going 8-0-0.
• On the road, Clarkson is 5-2-2 with a 29-23 edge in goals.

Series vs Minnesota State: Clarkson and Minnesota State will face off for the first time this weekend in the Windjammer Classic.

Series vs Penn State: Clarkson and Penn State have played each other four times with the Golden Knights winning all four games. Clarkson opened up the 2016-17 season with its first ever matchups against the Nittany Lions. Clarkson won the first game 4-2 behind Rhyen McGill's goal and assist. Michaela Pejzlova also scored while Ella Shelton tallied and assisted. Shelton also assisted on the game-winning goal the following night in the 2-1 victory at Cheel Arena.  The Golden Knights traveled to Happy Valley the next season and would sweep the weekend winning 2-0 in both games. Elizabeth Giguere and Pejzlova powered the weekend with each tallying one goal two assists. None of Clarkson's goaltenders have played against Penn State.

Series vs Vermont:  The Golden Knights have dominated the all-time series against Vermont going 19-2-3 in 24 games. Clarkson had its five-game winning streak and eight-game unbeaten streak against the Catamounts snapped during the 2017-18 season when Vermont took down the Green and Gold 3-2 on their home ice. Following a three-hour trip home from Burlington to Cheel Arena, Clarkson dominated the second game of the weekend beating Vermont 4-0 in Potsdam. The Golden Knights have outscored the Catamounts 87-22 in 24 games. Rhyen McGill has been sensational against Vermont scoring four goals and tallying three assists in five games. Michaela Pejzlova has scored three goals and has an assist against the Catamounts. None of Clarkson's goaltenders have played against Vermont.
