Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Knights Start ECAC Slate with 4-3 Win Over Harvard

Cambridge, NY – Sophomore Manon Le Scodan assisted on the first two goals for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team and Kennedy Sisson scored what proved to be the game-winner early in the third period as the Golden Knights opened ECAC Hockey play with a 4-3 victory over Harvard University on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, winners of seven straight, improved to 9-2 on the year and 1-0 in league play, while the Crimson fell to 3-2 and 0-1. Clarkson takes on Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon.

It didn't take long for the Golden Knights to get on the scoreboard, as Jessie Pellerin scored at 2:32 in the opening period. Harvard was trying to clear its defensive zone and got the puck out into neutral ice, but the Golden Knights intercepted the attempt short of center ice. Manon Le Scodan quickly created a transition opportunity with a pass to Pellerin along the left wing, and Pellerin skated in for a shot that got through Ainsley Tuffy and trickled over the goal line for an early 1-0 advantage.

Despite getting outshot by a wide margin in the early going, the Crimson tied the contest on their first true scoring chance of the game. Carla McSweeney won the puck behind the Clarkson net and still held possession around the left circle, sending a pass to Angelica Megdanis below the goal line. Megdanis attempted a wrap around that was denied, but Morgan McGathey was there to tuck the puck in, knotting the game up 1-1 at 7:14.

Clarkson began the second period similarly to the first with an overwhelming edge in shots and its second goal of the contest was repeat of the first, albeit with a different goal scorer. The Knights had a lengthy run of puck possession in the Harvard end before the Crimson seemed ready to try transition in the other direction. From behind the net, the Crimson got the puck out of the zone only to see Le Scodan intercept the puck in the neutral zone, this time along the right side boards. One pass to Janelle Evans at the blue line allowed the senior some space with which to work and she chose to go five-hole from the left circle's line near the slot, recording the score at 8:44.

The Golden Knights scored once more near the end of the frame to provide some additional cushion heading into the final period with a goal from Shelby Laidlaw at 16:30. Harvard cleared the zone, considerably deeper into the Clarkson zone this time, but again the Knights tallied quickly on the regroup. Jaela Carter chased down puck, turned and sent a pass off the boards all the way to Isabelle Goettl at the blue line. That created a 3-on-1 and Laidlaw was able to score from the slot after a quick pass from Goettl from the left side. Following a 14-7 edge I shots in the first period, the Knights led in the second by a margin of 11-4.

The best scoring chance early in the third period came when Layla Matthew won a race to puck near center ice and had a breakaway opportunity against Ainsley Tuffy. Matthew tried to go to the stick side of the Harvard goalkeeper, but ran out of space and ended up colliding with Tuffy to end the try.

Barely two minutes later, the Knights picked up an insurance goal when Isabelle Goettl had a pass from the top of the left circle to the right circle for Kennedy Sisson. The first-year collegian then had a perfect snipe shot from the bottom of the dot, going top shelf over the stick side shoulder of Tuffy at 7:44 to make it 4-1.

The Crimson would reduce the margin back to two just over a minute later. It was an unfortunate moment for the Knights as they were on the penalty kill, though Keira Hurry was looking to score in the other direction with a 1-on-1. However, Hurry's stick snapped in two at the top of the slot and was forced to race off the ice. In the transition going the other way, the Crimson took advantage of the confusion as a fourth skater was joining the fray for Clarkson, but the Knights couldn't get back into their defensive positioning quick enough with Ella Lucia scoring at 8:55.

That goal provided a bit of a spark for Harvard as the Crimson scored again four minutes later. This time it was Angelica Megdanis from the top of the slot, utilizing some moving parts in front of Clarkson goaltender Kalia Pharand. The last screen provided enough time for Megdanis to go top shelf, just over Pharand's glove at 13:07.

Over the final three minutes, the Golden Knights did an outstanding job of keeping the puck away from the Crimson, specifically in the Harvard defensive zone. Clarkson took shots in an attempt to put the game away, but even off misses the team pounced upon loose pucks for a lengthy sustained possession in Harvard's end. The Crimson finally were able to pull Tuffy for an extra skater with less than 40 seconds to go, only to see Clarkson hold on for its seventh straight win.

Clarkson finished with a 31-22 edge in shots on goal and a 48-30 lead overall. Only two penalties were called in the entirety of the contest as the Knights went scoreless in their lone chance and Harvard capitalized on its only opportunity. Pharand made 19 saves for the Knights and Tuffy had 27 stops for Harvard.
