Matthew and Manness Combine for Four Goals in Season-Opening 6-3 Win For Knights

Potsdam, NY – Sophomores Layla Matthew and Sara Manness each found the back of the net twice as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team opened up the regular season with a 6-3 victory over RIT on Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The two teams will meet up again on Saturday afternoon, with the first puck drop scheduled for 3:00 pm.

The Golden Knights controlled the first period, and that showed with two goals before the midpoint of the opening frame. The first came shortly after RIT was whistled for a penalty, as Sara Manness won the faceoff at the left circle and the puck went back to Jessie Pellerin. One more quick pass to the opposite dot, well before the Tigers defense could shift into position, found Ciara Lang and she went top shelf to the stick side of RIT goaltender Brenna McNamara.

It was only 41 seconds after the initial power play goal that Clarkson would tally again, this time while even with the Tigers. Shelby Laidlaw had the puck behind the net and passed it out to the point for Sydney Lamb, where she took a shot in hopes of finding some daylight or a Clarkson stick for a redirect. It hit the pads of McNamara and rebounded right to Layla Matthew, who finished up the play with a score at 7:30.

RIT did a good job of evening up the play in the second period as shot disparity was not as significant in the middle 20. It would take more than three-quarters of the frame before RIT could get on the board, but the Tigers were able to cut the margin in half with less than four minutes to play before the second intermission. Zoe Ziotas gained possession at the right circle and skated all the way around the Clarkson defense, using the net as a shield against any kind of checks. By the time she got back out in front, she used some patience to pick her spot and wristed a shot in past Arianna Leblanc at 16:40.

Three minutes later, the Knights regained their two-goal advantage, capitalizing on a 3-on-3 rush with an eventual rebound. The rest of the skaters made their way into the zone by the time that Kennedy Sisson had put a shot on goal, but the rebound came right to her in the slot. Instead of forcing another shot that may have come awkwardly off the stick, Sisson chose to send a backhand pass to Sara Manness waiting near the right circle. Manness would up for a one-timer and did not miss, finding the back of the net at 19:23 for a 3-1 lead.

The best chance early on in the third period came from RIT when the team caught the Knights in a change, but Leblanc made a quick save near the left circle and then flipped the puck aside before an organized follow-up could be made by the Tigers. Only a few minutes after that rush, the Knights found themselves up by three on a quick transition goal. RIT was trying to get things going in the Clarkson defensive zone, but the puck was broken up and ended up on the stick of Ciara Lang. Using good vision down the ice, Lang split the RIT defenders and found Kennedy Sisson just a few strides away from the opposite blue line. Sisson collected the pass and quickly changed her footing to attack mode, skating in and flipping the puck past McNamara before she could close any space to cut down the angle. The goal at 10:33 gave the Knights a 4-1 advantage.

Clarkson began to run away with the game in the final seven minutes, scoring twice in a stretch of two minutes. The first was a combined effort on a steal by Raedyn Spademan and Layla Matthew, with Matthew taking a shot in the slot that was initially denied. Laidlaw nearly knocked the puck in on the rebound, but it went wide to Spademan behind the net. Matthew tapped her stick calling for the puck and Spademan found her at the bottom of the left circle for a one-time at 13:14. Less than two minutes later, the Knights picked up another goal as the sophomore class combined for a sixth goal. Manness had the puck near center ice and went forward to Le Scodan, who skated further up ice, all the way to the goal line. That allowed Manness to fill the lane for yet another one-timer as she picked up her second goal of the game at 14:53.

RIT was able to narrow the gap late with a pair of goals in the final three minutes. The first came when Addie Alvarez stole the puck near the bench-side boards, walked in and took a shot. Leblanc got a glove on it, but didn't catch it clean, as it fell into the back of the net at 17:09. Less than a minute later, Laura Dyke was able to tally on the power play as a simple wrist shot snuck through a screen at 18:01.

Clarkson finished with a 41-21 edge in shots on goal (74-45 total). Each team scored once on the power play and the Knights had a 37-19 lead on faceoffs. Leblanc finished with 18 saves for the Knights. McNamara made 33 saves for RIT, while Oceanne Thiffault stopped three shots in relief duty over the final few moments.
