Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Knights' Eight-Game Win Streak Snapped by RPI

Troy, NY - One of the more unlikely teams to halt the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team winning streak did just that on Friday evening, as Rensselaer shocked the ninth-ranked Golden Knights with a 3-1 decision in ECAC Hockey play.

Despite an 82-31 advantage in total shot attempts and a 41-17 lead in shots on goal, the Golden Knights saw their unbeaten run come to an end, falling to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while RPI improved to 2-13 and 1-5. Clarkson looks to get back on track against Union College on Saturday afternoon.

The key for the Engineers was getting two goals off rebounds and riding the strong goaltending play of Reese Keating, who posted 40 saves.

Although RPI had a small advantage in shots in the early going, the Golden Knights scored just 20 seconds in a power play opportunity. Clarkson won the faceoff and kept the puck in the zone, passing around the perimeter and boards to get its players into position and the strategy capitalized almost immediately. Keira Hurry had the puck in the point and found Janelle Evans near the left dot, prepped for a one-timer. Instead of ripping a shot, Evans chose to catch the RPI defense off guard and sent a pass through the slot to Manon Le Scodan just outside the crease on the opposite side, giving the sophomore an easy chance for a goal at 3:55 in the game.

The Engineers surprised the Golden Knights with a goal roughly 10 minutes later with some active stick work at both ends. RPI got the possession while Clarkson was in the Engineers' defensive zone as a poke knocked the puck away and produced a 3-on-3 the other way. One shot by the Engineers was denied and it looks like Clarkson would clear the puck, but again some simple stick work dislodged possession and creased a scrum in front of the goal, with Michaela Littlewood tucking the puck in on the right side of the crease at 13:58.

After trailing early in shots on goal, the Knights ended the first period with a significant advantage in shots on goal (17-9) and overall attempts (29-13) as RPI goaltender Reese Keating kept the game tied with several solid saves throughout the final half of the period.

RPI took the lead six minutes into the second period, the first time that the Engineers found themselves ahead in a game in a month (October 9th vs. Robert Morris). The Engineers forced a turnover and created a 2-on-1 in the other direction, but instead of forcing the issue RPI waited for the rest of the team to settle in and create a chance. Naomi Forand raised her stick to call for a one-timer at the top of the slot and followed through, though the shot was stopped by Arianne Leblanc. However, the rebound dropped to the stick of Mia Montanari and she slipped in a backhand at 6:21 to make it 2-1.

It seemed as if the rink was still tilted for Clarkson for the first 10 minutes of the third period, though the Knights had just a small advantage in shots on goal as RPI's defense was busy getting into shooting lanes with both sticks and bodies. The Engineers had a big opportunity after the media timeout when they were able to skate up a player due to a Clarkson penalty. Another infraction game RPI a 5-on-3 for 52 seconds, but the Golden Knights wiggled out of the jam to build a bit of momentum for the final five minutes.

Almost immediately after the RPI goal, Clarkson was on the power play, but unlike its first try with an extra skater the Knights came up empty. Clarkson would get two more tries on the power play in the final six minutes as well, only to see RPI kill off the first and eliminate 85 more seconds off the latter penalty before the horn sounded to close out the second period.

It seemed as if the ice was tilted for the Golden Knights even more at the start of the third, though that did not result in a significant advantage in terms in shots on goal as the RPI defenders were busy getting into the way of shooting lanes with either their sticks or their bodies. Following the media timeout, the Engineers had a significant opportunity to put the game away when they went on their first power play of the game, and that advantage got larger when the Knights were whistled for a second infraction, causing a 5-on-3 for 52 seconds. Clarkson killed off both penalties and appeared to have the momentum back, but Keating stopped two outstanding scoring opportunities for Clarkson. The first was a glove save on a wrist shot from the middle of the slot by Sydney Lamb with four minutes to go and only a minute later Janelle Evans 1-on-1 with Keating was denied by a leg pad.

RPI scored an insurance goal with an empty net with two minutes left in the game and any further hope of a Clarkson comeback was removed when the Knights were called for a penalty with less than 90 seconds to play.
