Pellerin and Evans Score Twice in Clarkson's 6-2 Win at Union

Schenectady, NY – After being stymied on Friday evening, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team's offense was back to its old ways with a 6-2 win over Union College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in ECAC Hockey while the Garnet Chargers saw their record fall to 8-5 and 3-4. Clarkson will be back at home for a pair of league games next weekend, hosting Yale on Friday and Brown on Saturday.

Several players had standout days for Clarkson on offense, including four point days from Janelle Evans (2-2) and Manon Le Scodan (1-3) as well as a three-point effort from Jessie Pellerin.

Though Clarkson was even with Union in shots in the first period, it was the Knights that would find the back of the net twice in the opening frame. Clarkson was on the board less than six minutes into the contest following a turnover in the neutral zone to help the Knights regain possession. Janelle Evans shot on the right side was denied, but she and Le Scodan combined for a take away in the corner and a centering pass found Jessie Pellerin in the slot for a one-timer, making it 1-0 at 5:49.

Seven-plus minutes later, the Knights picked up another goal when Kate Manness scored from between the blue line and the right circle at 13:24. Isabelle Goettl dumped the puck in on the right side and Shelby Laidlaw won the chase, flipping it back out to Goettl. She then dropped off a pass for Manness, who utilized a screen from Laidlaw for a 2-0 Clarkson lead.

The second and third periods saw Clarkson dominate in terms of shots on goal, out producing the Garnet Chargers 35-9 over the final 40 minutes. However, it took some time for the Knights to pull away as only one extra goal was scored in the third. Clarkson picked up possession in the neutral zone and had a 3-on-3 rush into the zone, but pinpoint passing made it look easy as Pellerin backhanded a pass from the slot to Le Scodan at the left side of the crease to make it 3-0.

Union's hopes stayed alive with an unlikely goal early in the third. Karianne Engelbert flung a medium-paced shot at the net, almost more of a controlled dump-in, that somehow sneaked through the pads of Clarkson goaltender Kalia Pharand, trickling over the goal line with one official standing right at the post having not even noticed the puck going in. After review, it was decided Pharand never had full possession, and Union was on the board at 2:42.

The two teams traded goals a few minutes later. Clarkson tallied its fourth on a nifty toe drag from Pellerin, who had to poke at the puck a few more times before it finally crossed the line at 6:56. Union responded with a score less than a minute later as a pass from the left boards was centered right in front of the crease, causing a scrum that Ella Skotty won at 7:49.

Despite the massive shot advantage, it wasn't until late in the contest that Clarkson put the game away with two empty net goals. Evans scored the first when Le Scodan's shot from center ice went just wide of the net and Evans was there to collect the rebound and shot the puck off a Union defender at 19:02 to make it 5-2. With 4.3 seconds left in the contest, Clarkson got another goal from Evans, as Le Scodan sent an easy backhand pass to set up Clarkson's sixth goal.

The Knights ended the game with an 87-36 edge in total shots and a 47-21 lead in shots on goal. Pharand finished with 19 saves and Emma Rheaume had 41 saves for Union. Both teams were scoreless on the power play, Clarkson in its three chances (one came with 4.3 seconds left) and Union on its two tries.
