Knights Sweep First of Two Series Against Saints

Potsdam, NY – Freshman goaltender Kalia Pharand was within six seconds of a second shutout in as many days but instead had to settle for another win for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as the Golden Knights posted a 3-1 win over St. Lawrence University Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-2 overall while the Saints dropped to 1-5. Clarkson will be home next weekend as well when the team hosts Franklin Pierce University.

The Golden Knights had three solid chances in the first 10 minutes, twice hitting a post, with Sydney Lamb doing so at 1:30 and Jessie Pellerin at 6:02, and then a 2-on-2 that saw Pellerin just miss on her forehand near the midway point of the frame. Though Clarkson had the best opportunities early on, St. Lawrence had a lengthy scoring opportunity when the Knights were whistled for a penalty with a little under seven minutes to go in the period. SLU had its chances with a few shots in close, but the key to the penalty kill was Clarkson locking the puck along the boards for more than 35 seconds combined, once behind the net and once more along the left side near the blue line.

Clarkson had an extended run in the SLU defensive end with less than four minutes to go, and the extended shift for the Saints' defense eventually turned into a score for the Knights. Shelby Laidlaw's shot was saved by Maja Helge, but Kennedy Sisson picked up the rebound at the bottom of the left circle and skated around to the top of that circle, wristing a shot top shelf from the slot at 16:56 to put Clarkson up 1-0, with assists going to Laidlaw and Morgan Walton.

The second period once again saw Clarkson with a solid shot in the early portion of the frame as Manon Le Scodan accepted a long pass to create a bit of a breakaway while entering the SLU defensive zone, but her shot went just wide.

Clarkson had a power play opportunity a few minutes later that came up empty, but the Green and Gold would score shortly after its conclusion off a quick transition. An errant puck found the stick of Jessie Pellerin deep in the Clarkson zone, creating a 3-on-2 since a few players were trailing behind the net. Pellerin shuffled a pass to the right for Abby Richardson as Pellerin filled the center lane of the 3-on-2. Richardson found Pellerin in stride at the top of the slot, and Pellerin slipped the puck between Helge's pads near the left post at 6:59.

The Knights enjoyed a significant advantage in shots in the second period, leading 27-10 overall, which was even more lopsided (26-4) before the Saints had themselves another power play late in the frame. Overall, through the first two period, the Golden Knights enjoyed a 24-12 advantage in shots on goal and a 45-27 edge in total attempts.

Neither team put together much offense in the third period, though the Saints had an edge up to the mid-period timeout, putting six shots on goal against Clarkson's three. With a little under seven minutes to go SLU's Abby Hehl had an open look from the top of the circle that was denied and only 12 seconds later Pellerin's one-timer was denied, as the offenses began to heat up.

With 2:20 remaining, SLU pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker, but it was Clarkson that would pick up the score. An errant pass from behind the net by the Saints only found Raedyn Spademan at the top of the slot and she sent a shot down the length of the ice, going straight down the middle of the empty goal at 18:04.

Both teams were called for penalties in the final minute as Kalia Pharand was looking forward to a second straight shutout, but a one-timer from Alexia Cote with 5.8 seconds left in the game pulled that hope away from the first-year collegian as SLU was able to have one moment in the two-game series.

Clarkson finished with a 30-27 edge in shots on goal and both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play. Pharand ended the contest with 26 saves, tying her output from the previous game, while Helge ended with 27 saves for the Saints.
