Lang Scores Go-Ahead Goal and Clincher in Knights 3-1 Win Over Franklin Pierce

Potsdam, NY – Although the team struggled to solve the opposing goaltender until the second period, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team picked up its fifth win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Franklin Pierce on Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights moved to 5-2 on the year with their third straight victory, while Franklin Pierce fell to 2-5. Clarkson will take on the Ravens once again early Saturday afternoon.

Though Clarkson controlled the first period with some lengthy stretches in the Ravens defensive zone, the Golden Knights came up empty in terms of goals. The best opportunities came off the stick of Kate Manness when she had a one-timer during the Green and Gold's lone power play chance. Sara Manness tried a put back later on in the period, and Shelby Laidlaw had a solid scoring chance late in the period as well. Clarkson had a 30-3 edge in total shots, with 19 of those shots on goal, all of which were denied by Franklin Pierce goaltender Delaney Lawn.

Weathering that early storm, the Ravens scored the first goal of the game just 79 seconds into the second period. Lilah Bauer stepped in front of the Ravens to collect a loose puck and slipped it forward to Anna Caumo near the top of the left circle. Caumo did the rest, skating through the neutral one unimpeded and then crossing through the slot towards the Clarkson left circle, shooting high into the upper corner to make it 1-0 at 1:19.

While the Knights continued to get shots off on the Ravens' defense, the total shots of on goal were not as significant in the second period until Clarkson went on its second power play of the game. The Knights utilized much of the extra skater opportunity before putting together a solid chance. Keira Hurry kept the puck in along the blue line and went defense-to-defense for Kate Manness at the left point. She then sent a pass through the slot to Sara Manness at the right faceoff dot. The Ravens' defense had to respect Manness and committed hard to protecting that side of the ice, allowing her to send a pass back to the opposite post where Janelle Evans had all kinds of time to flip the puck into the back of the net, tying the game at 11:14.

The goal by the Knights revived Clarkson's offense further, as the Knights continued to pepper the Franklin Pierce defense with four shots on goal in a stretch of just over two minutes with Delaney Lawn continuing to show off her prowess in the crease. The Knights would eventually get on top thanks to a strong shift from Ciara Lang. The Knights kept the puck in the Ravens' zone for nearly a full minute, with Lang staying on the left side of the boards to keep the puck in on four separate occasions. Her acumen from the blue line turned into some offense when she collected a pass from Isabelle Goettl, using a screen to take a wrist shot from the top of the slot and beat Lawn with less than 90 seconds remaining in the second period.

The third was another lopsided frame for the Knights, but again Lawn continued to be tough to beat. The sophomore produced 17 saves in the final stretch and kept Clarkson from pulling away, making a number of stops late. That continued rush by Clarkson kept the Ravens from pulling their goalie until very late in the contest, and the Knights were able to put the game away with an empty net goal from Lang as she fluttered a puck down ice and into the vacated crease with only 8.4 seconds left on the game clock.

Clarkson finished with a 56-9 lead in shots on goal and had a 92-14 advantage overall. Kalia Pharand ended the contest with eight saves, while Lawn, a sophomore playing in just her third collegiate game, made 53 stops.
