UConn Scores Three Unanswered to Down Knights, 3-2

Stoors, CT - Despite two first-period goals that made it appear as if the visitors would run away for a third straight win, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team was held scoreless over the final two periods and suffered a 3-2 loss to University of Connecticut on Friday night.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-1-0 on the season while the Huskies picked up their first win. The two teams will meet once again on Saturday afternoon.

Both of Clarkson's first period goals came out of grittiness in the corners. The first came less than six minutes into the game when the Knights were able to transition quickly out of their own defensive end, creating a 4-on-2 when the puck was slid off the left side boards. Clarkson used its speed to create the odd-player rush as Manon Le Scodan had the puck on the left side entering the UConn zone before going cross ice to Kate Manness. Sara Manness followed by filling the slot and took the past from her sister, going top shelf at 5:51 to make the score 1-0.

Clarkson nearly picked up another score near the midway point of the period but Jessie Pellerin's shot on the right side of the crease was gloved by UConn goaltender Taylor Belchetz. Fortunately for the Knights, they didn't have to wait long to pick up a second score. The puck again hugged the boards, this time behind the UConn net before scooting out to Janelle Evans in the corner. She slung the puck out to the left point for Keira Hurry, who quickly found her defensive linemate Kate Manness on the opposite point. Manness then waited for an opening and wristed the shot past Belchetz at 14:05 to put the tally at 2-0 in favor of Clarkson.

In the second period, each team had a chance in the early going. Ciara Lang was denied at the crease on a quick pass out in front, and Aneta Senkova stopped a stuff attempt by the Huskies just a minute later. UConn would break its scoreless run against Clarkson about seven minutes into the frame. Sadie Hotles came in on the left side and discovered Caileigh Tiller in the slot. Tiller had one more pass to Claire Murdoch at the opposite side of the crease, and while her first attempt didn't go in, she got enough of the loose puck to guide it in underneath Senkova's glove at 6:54.

After the mid-period break, Clarkson had some trouble clearing the puck out of its defensive end, giving the Huskies a few chances at the net. That finally paid dividends when Caileigh Tiller finished off a check near the boards and drifted back into the slot. There the puck found its way to her stick and she went high to the opposite post, tying the score 2-2 at 13:58.

Clarkson held the shot advantage in the first period (11-6), but the edge was held by UConn in the second period (17-7).

UConn had some chances in the third, including a post being wrung by Ellie Markakis, but the Huskies would eventually capitalize late in the contest. The Huskies skated in on a 2-on-2 which appeared like it would be a textbook give-and-go between Laurie Aubin and Julia Pellerin, but Pellerin chose to keep the puck and wristed a shot from the left dot to score at 13:38 in the third, making it 3-2.

Clarkson pulled the goalie late to try and find the equalizer, but the Huskies smothered any opportunities by the Knights and held on for the win.

The Knights finished with a 31-30 edge in shots on goal. Neither team scored on their one power-play chance, and UConn finished with 20 blocked shots. Senkova had 27 saves and Belchetz had 29 stops.
