Four Power Play Goals Send Knights to 4-0 Defeat at UConn

Storrs, CT – Four power-play goals on four chances doomed the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as University of Connecticut took advantage of the Golden Knights' penalties for a 4-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

The battle of two top-15 teams tilted in favor of UConn for the second straight day, as the Golden Knights fell to 2-2 on the year and the Huskies improved to 2-2. Clarkson faces St. Lawrence University on Thursday and Friday next week.

Clarkson held a 43-28 edge in shots overall, including a plus-margin in all three periods, but the Knights could not overcome the quick strikes of UConn on the power play, as the Huskies needed just five total shots on goal (and six overall) to convert their four goals.

The first score came late in the opening period when Janelle Evans was whistled for cross checking. Only 24 seconds later, UConn was on the board when a missed clear attempt following a pad save by Kalia Pharand went to the stick of Claire Murdoch for the goal at 16:12.

The Huskies scored twice on the power play in the middle period, one coming early and the other near the middle of the second. Keira Hurry was called for interference and on the ensuing faceoff, the Huskies converted. The pass from down below was somewhat of a lost puck as the UConn player did not get a lot on it, but it found its way to the stick of Sadie Hotles in the slot for a score at 2:31, only eight seconds into the power play.  The second power play goal of the period was near the end, but it was the only shot on goal during player-advantage. With roughly half a minute left, Ellie Markakis converted on a shot pass from behind the net at 9:41, as UConn capitalized on a high sticking call.

Clarkson was sent to the box for another infraction in the third period and again UConn was able to score off a regroup in the other end, just 24 seconds in. The puck was in the opposite end as the Huskies reset, but most of the work was done by Caileigh Tiller, as she skated up the left side of the rink and wristed a shot from the dot of the faceoff circle, making the score 4-0 with 4:58 remaining in the game.

When the teams were even, the Knights outshot UConn 43-23, as Clarkson never skated with a player-advantage since the Huskies went without a penalty. Kalia Pharand had 24 saves for the Knights and Taylor Belchetz posted 43 stops for the Huskies.
