Knights Offense Erupts for Seven Goals in Runaway Win Over Franklin Pierce

Potsdam, NY – A day after struggling to find the back of the net until late in the game, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team scored twice in the first period, added two more in the second, and tallied three more in the third to win going away 7-0 against Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson improved to 6-2 on the season, winning its fourth straight game, while the Ravens fell to 2-6. The Green and Gold will be home once again next weekend when the team hosts Providence on Friday at 6:00 pm and then on Saturday at 3:00 pm.

The Knights got off to a strong start in the first period, producing a 24-4 edge in shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes, but it took more than 10 minutes before the first of those shots found its way through the Ravens' defense. Raedyn Spademan went into the corner and was able to dig the puck out, sending a pass out in front, finding Layla Matthew in front. Matthew got just enough of a stick on it to get the puck moving forward and it trickled over the line at 10:43.

Late in the period, the Knights picked up a second score, this time on the power play. Just a few seconds after the puck was dropped at the left circle, Jessie Pellerin won the draw, and tipped in back to Kate Manness. One more pass through the slot found Sara Manness at the right circle and she delivered a wrist shot from the dot to make it 2-0.

Although Clarkson did not have the same kind of shot advantage in the second as it did in the first (12-7 SOG), the Knights still scored twice in the middle period. Clarkson increased its lead to 3-0 when the puck stayed in the zone thanks to Shelby Laidlaw, and her pass found Janelle Evans, who hit an absolutely perfect shot from the left circle, sending a snipe shot off the far post and in at 4:22. Thirteen minutes later, the Knights extended the advantage with a steal in the neutral zone and creating a 3-on-2 in the other direction. Evans held the puck on the right side and waited for a trailer in the slot, locating Gabrielle Lalonde for an easy look at 17:08, putting the tally at 4-0.

The Knights tacked on three more goals in the third period and in between had another called off in a dominating final stretch that saw the team post a 30-4 edge in total shots and 19-1 lead in shots on goal. The first of those third-period goals came on the power play after Shelby Laidlaw was taken down in the Ravens' zone. Shortly after the extra skater chance began, Kate Manness was able to beat the Franklin Pierce goaltender with a wrist shot from the high slot at 6:54. A few minutes later, Clarkson had a goal taken off the board, but it mattered little as the team scored two more times in the final three minutes of the contest.

Manon Le Scodan sent a pass forward through the neutral zone to Jessie Pellerin and she then worked a give-and-go with Sara Manness, as Manness drew the defenders towards her and allowed Pellerin to create some space before scoring at 17:36. Two minutes later, Pellerin added a second goal to her day's resume, tipping in a shot by Keira Hurry while the team was on the power play once again at 19:47.

Clarkson finished with a 96-20 edge in total shot attempts which included a 55-12 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights also went 3-for-3 on the power play and kept the Ravens off the board in their four power play chances. Kate Manness led the way with four points, scoring a goal and assisting on three others, while both Pellerin and Evans added three points. Aneta Senkova made 12 stops to secure the shutout win and Rylee Eno made 48 saves for Franklin Pierce.
