Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Soderwall Stops 19 in Clarkson's 5-0 Shutout Win Over Canisius

Potsdam, NY – Eleven different players recorded a point as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team recovered from a Friday overtime defeat to post a 5-0 victory over Canisius on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 2-2-0 on the year, while Canisius slipped to 3-2-1. Clarkson has a two-game series against Vermont next weekend, the first game played in Burlington on Friday and then the Knights are back on home ice on Saturday afternoon.

Much like Friday's game, the Knights had advantages in total shots in each of the periods, but had many of their chances fly wide of the goal. One of the best scoring opportunities early came from Justin Cote, as his shot from the bottom of the right circle was denied and a couple of attempts for a tap in were denied as well.

Clarkson was able to get on the scoreboard shortly after Cote's miss, recording a goal on the power play. Ty Brassington played a key role in the goal without showing up in the points' column, keeping the puck just in at the blue line and sending a pass into the right side. Mael St.-Denis tried to find a player on the doorstep in front of the crease, but the puck was tipped away by a Griffins defender. Fortunately for Clarkson, Owen Van Steensel was there to pick up the loose puck and wristed a shot in at 13:32.

The Knights held on to their advantage thanks to some strong play from goalkeeper Shane Soderwall, especially on the power play when the netminder made some solid stops amid confusion in front of the net. Clarkson took advantage with two late goals in the period to build a larger margin.

The first goal came shortly after Hayden Reed's one-timer shot was wide of the frame, but the Knights were able to keep the puck in the Canisius zone. Roughly 30 seconds after the off-target attempt, it was Reed again, taking a pass from Michael Craig and then side-skating around a defender, allowing him to walk in for a wrist shot from the right circle at 16:08, making it 2-0.

Less than three minutes later, the Knights scored on a seemingly innocuous attempt, as Clarkson skated into the zone with no numbers really presenting themselves. Bryce Sookro decided to go to the left side for Tyler Wallace. Wallace chose to put a puck on net to see what might come about, but he found enough space between the post and the Canisius goalkeeper to make it 3-0 at 18:39.

Clarkson put the game away with a goal near the midway point of the third period. The puck was rimmed around the back of the net where Bryce Sookro picked up the loose puck along the right side boards. He simply tipped it back to Shawn O'Donnell, and the senior utilized multiple screens in front to sneak a wrist shot through the traffic to make it 4-0 at 10:53.

A number of matching penalties created some 4-on-4 chances, though a five-minute major to end the game gave Clarkson a chance to tack on another score. The Knights would do so with a little tic-tac-toe play, with Justin Cote taking a slight delay after the first couple passes, pulling his stick back to pick a corner and closing out the game with a power-play score.

Clarkson finished by nearly doubling up Canisius in total shots (71-36), but the shots on goal were decidedly closer at 29-19. The Knights also went 2-for-6 on the power play and Canisius was scoreless in four chances. Shane Soderwall stopped all 19 shots he faced for the shutout, while Jack Lisson made 24 saves for the Golden Griffins.
