Rutland, VT – Sophomore Ryan Makowski and Eric Spoth each carded 73s to lead the Clarkson University Golf team on day one of the Castleton Invitational, held at the par-70 Rutland Country Club.

Clarkson's team score of 305 was a considerable improvement compared to last year's first day at the Rutland course when the Golden Knights produced a team tally of 327 on the first day and 318 on day two.

Makowski and Spoth are in a three-way tie for first in the field of 33 golfers through 18 holes.

Makowski produced a one-over 36 on the front nine and was two-over on the back nine. He had a birdie on each half of the course, scoring one on the second hole and then one on the 10th, both par-fours. Spoth had a trio of birdies on his scorecard, each of which was a par-four. He did so on the ninth hole, 11th hole, and 16th hole, producing 37 on the front and a 36 on the back nine.

Daniel Wilson had 39 on both the front and back for a 78, also picking up three birdies. He scored them on back-to-back holes on the ninth and 10th, and then went for a birdie on a par-three on the 15th. Joe Tiderencel finished off Clarkson's team score with an 81, going for 37 on the front and 44 on the back. Despite the higher score on the back, Tiderencel's lone birdie came on the par-three 12th hole. Andrew Palmatier was outside the team scoring, but was just one shot short of getting involved, as he had an 82 for the day. He recorded one birdie in the round, doing so on the par-three 15th.
