Colby Wins Three Events to Lead CU Swimmers & Divers Past SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Landon Colby won three individual events in his first competitive race of 2023, as the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving program returned to action with a dual meet sweep at SUNY Potsdam.

Clarkson's men defeated the Bears by a score of 174-98 while the Golden Knights' women downed Potsdam 181-99. The Green and Gold will be back in action next weekend with an appearance at the two-day Middlebury Invitational.

Colby had the top time in three events, winning the 100 breaststroke (1:03.35), the 100 butterfly (54.76), and the 400 individual medley (4:35.91). Colby also was a part of the winning 400 medley relay (3:43.89) along with Aidan Howard, Michael Schroeder, and Connor Tasselmyer. The latter swimmer also won his individual start in the 50 freestyle, taking the event in 22.50 seconds, while Schroeder picked up a victory in the 200 butterfly (2:04.18). Howard also swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay with Tim Jordan, Andrew Sypko, and Tasselmyer, as that group combined for a time of 1:31.21.

The Clarkson men had a handful of other individual winners as well, with Guillermo Barrios taking top honors in the 1000 freestyle (11:04.58) and Tristan Miranda coming in first in the 500 freestyle (5:06.87). Max Lempert also took first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 165.85.

On the women's side, two swimmer won multiple events, as sophomore Gabriela McSwieney won the 200 freestyle (2:05.07) and 500 freestyle (5:31.10) and junior Bella Triolet had the top times in the 100 backstroke (1:06.51) and 100 butterfly (1:04.33). Clarkson had six other swimmers win individual races. Madelyn Nowicki had the top time in the 200 butterfly (2:28.19), Emily Green came in first in the 50 freestyle (27.42), Ellen Patterson finished first in the 100 freestyle (59.95), Aurelia Leonard won the 200 backstroke (2:21.97), and Sydney Kanner hit the pads first in the 200 breaststroke (2:47.64). Although she didn't win the event, Paige Cutler set a mark in the 3-meter dive, scoring 187.25 points in her six dive attempts.

Clarkson also picked up first-place finishes in the two relays. Leonard, Kanner, Triolet, and McSwieney combined to win the 400 medley relay (4:20.04) to start the day, and McSwieney, Triolet, Leonard, and Sina Lufkin closed out the day with a time of 1:47.26 in the 200 freestyle relay.
