Four Knights Take Top Spots on Day One of North Country Invitational

Potsdam, NY – At the halfway mark of the annual North Country Invitational, both sides of the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving team are within striking distance of a victory.

The Golden Knights' women sit in second place at the mid-point of the NCI with 273.5 points, trailing St. Michael's (298) but well ahead of Norwich (153.50), Oswego State (114), and SUNY Potsdam (112). Clarkson's men are in third with 199 points, behind St. Michael's (249.5) and Norwich (244.5) and ahead of Oswego State (113) and SUNY Potsdam (90). The meet will resume at 10:00 am on Saturday morning.

Clarkson's women began with a victory in the 400 medley relay, as Aurelia Leonard, Claudia Scala, Bella Triolet, and Ava Lamontagne combined for a time of 4:18.10. Clarkson's swimmers also had a pair of individual victories thanks to sophomore Gabriela McSwieney's time in the 1650 freestyle (19:13.87) and junior Claudia Scala's 200 backstroke (2:21.60) finish. Triolet was just a half second behind Scala in the 200 backstroke (2:22.03) to take second-place points, and McSwieney also had the runner-up spot in the 500 freestyle (5:30.26). Leonard also had a pair of second-place showings, finishing the 50 freestyle in 25.62 seconds and the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.37.

For the men, freshman Connor Tasselmyer was less than a quarter second off a 35-year-old Golden Knight record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.63 seconds, winning that event for the Knights. Sophomore Michael Schroeder later won the 200 backstroke by well over three seconds with a time of 2:01.58. Clarkson's men had one other individual in the top three of an event, as Max Lempert was third in the 1-meter dive with 159.40 points. The Golden Knights closed out the day with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, as the grouping of Jared Enser, Aiden Howard, Tim Jordan, and Connor Tasselmyer produced a time of 1:29.37.
