Tasselmyer and Leonard Impress for CU Swimming & Diving on Opening Day

Canton, NY – First-years Connor Tasselmyer and Aurelia Leonard showed well in the first collegiate dual meets for the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving team, as the Golden Knights opened up 2022 with a tri-meet against RIT and St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights' men split, falling to RIT 244.5-50.5 and beating the Saints 201-47, while the women dropped both, coming up short 236-60 against the Tigers and 170-106 versus St. Lawrence. Clarkson will get another crack at the Saints next weekend in another dual meet in Canton.

In his first collegiate meet, Tasselmyer posted a pair of second-place finishes, taking the runner-up spot in the 50 freestyle (22.01 seconds) and then tying for second later in the day in the 100 freestyle (49.90). Other swimmers with multiple top-five finishes on the day were sophomore Tristin Miranda, who came in third in the 1000 freestyle (10:49.93) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:11.38), and classmate Michael Schroeder, who was fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:06.14), fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:04.29), and fifth in the 100 butterfly (55.44). Junior Colin Urmaza also was third in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.12) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.83).

For the women, Leonard had three top-four finishes, coming in second in the 100 backstroke (1:02.96), less than a second off the pace for the event, and third in the 50 freestyle (26.19) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:05.37). Gabriela McSwieney and Madelyn Nowicki also had a few spots near the top in their respective events for the Golden Knights. McSwieney was third in the 1000 freestyle (11:38.37) and fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:42.34), while Nowicki was third in both the 200 butterfly (2:31.34) and 200 individual medley (2:26.94). Paige Cutler also placed fourth in the diving events, scoring 155.65 points in the 1-meter and 155.10 in the 3-meter.
