CU Women's Hockey Travels to Brown and Yale

PDF of weekly release

After a slow start to the season, the #6/7 ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team has caught fire and is on an eight-game winning streak. The Golden Knights will try to extend the streak when they travel to play Brown and Yale. Clarkson will travel to Providence, RI on Friday to faceoff against Brown for a 6:00 pm game before heading to Yale for a 3:00 pm game on Saturday afternoon in New Haven, CT.

Led by ninth-year head coach Matt Desrosiers and assistant coaches Britni Smith and Tony Maci, the Green and Gold have a 10-3-1 overall record and are a perfect 6-0-0 in ECAC Hockey games. With two wins this weekend, Desrosiers will have 200 for his career. When he reaches the milestone win, Desrosiers will become just the tenth active head coach to reach 200 career wins at one school.

Last weekend, Clarkson scored 13 total goals, coming away with a 5-1 win over Union and an 8-3 victory against Rensselaer. Coming into the games, Clarkson's offense was tied for 11th in the country, averaging 3.08 goals per game. However, after the outburst against the Capital District foes, Clarkson's offense is now tied for sixth in the nation with an average of 3.57 goals per game. Clarkson also moved up in scoring defense and is now eighth in the country, allowing 1.79 goals per game, and power-play percentage as the Golden Knights have converted 17.8% which puts them in a tie for ninth.

In the two games last weekend, 15 Clarkson skaters recorded at least one point and 10 had multiple. Although neither scored a goal, co-captain Cayley Mercer and Rhyen McGill led the way with four points. McGill had two assists in both victories and is now second on the team with 13 points. She trails just Mercer who has 16 points. Mercer had one assist against Union and then tied her career high with three helpers against Rensselaer. Mercer is tied for 14th in the country in assists per game while McGill is tied for 11th with three power-play goals.

McGill and Mercer are two of three Clarkson players that are currently riding a six game point streak. The other is reigning ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month Michaela Pejzlova. Pejzlova scored a goal against Union and then followed it up with her first multi-goal game. She now has 12 points on the season and is tied for ninth in the country in points per game among rookies. Her classmates, Ella Shelton and Taylor Turnquist also had strong weekends with the pair notching two assists each against Union and another against Rensselaer. It was the first multi-point game of Turnquist's career as well as the first time she has recorded at least a point in consecutive games. Shelton is now 15th in the country in points per game among rookies and tied for 11th in points per game among defensemen.

Shelton is one of four Clarkson defensemen who are in the top 28 in the country in points. Co-captain Savannah Harmon is the top blueline scorer for Clarkson with 11 points so far, putting her in a tie for fourth nationally among defensemen. Next is Shelton who has 10 points and then Josiane Pozzebon who has tallied nine. Pozzebon is tied for fourth in the country in power-play goals with four and is tied for tenth with a pair of game-winning goals. Finally, Corie Jacobson already has a career-high eight points and is tied with Pozzebon and assistant captain Genevieve Bannon for the team lead in game-winning goals.

Brown has a 3-6-0 overall record this season and is tied for ninth in ECAC Hockey with a 1-5-0 record. The Bears started the season 2-0-1, but have just one win in their last seven games and are currently on a four game losing streak. Brown has struggled to score this season, as the Bears average just two goals per game and have been shutout four times this year. Alley Rempe has been a bright spot and already has eight points in her rookie campaign, which leads the team. In goal, Brown has played three different goaltenders, with senior Monica Elvin getting the most amount of time. Elvin has a .921 save percentage and a 2.91 goals against average.

Clarkson is 18-4-3 all-time against Brown and is on an 18 game unbeaten streak against the Bears, with a 16-0-2 record in that span. Bannon and Mercer have both enjoyed success against Brown, as the pair have eight and seven career points respectively in six games against the Bears. Last season, Clarkson beat Brown 7-0 twice and the highlight was a hat trick by Gabel in one of the wins.

Yale is one game over .500 this year with a 4-3-1 overall record and has a 2-3-1 conference mark which places them in a tie for sixth in ECAC Hockey. Yale was picked to finish ninth in the conference after finishing in the eighth and final playoff spot last season. The Bulldogs are coming off two road conference losses, but have a 4-1-1 record at home. Yale has experienced players up front as seniors Phoebe Staenz and Krista Yip-Chuck are tied for the team lead with 15 points apiece. In goal, two players have split time. Hanna Mandl has played four games, while Tera Hofmann has appeared in five, all of which have been conference games.

Clarkson leads Yale 17-6-1 all-time. The Golden Knights are 9-1-1 in their last 11 meetings with the Bulldogs, including two victories last season. The last time the two teams met was in the last game of the 2015-16 regular season. Clarkson came away with a 3-2 home win that day thanks to a power-play goal by McGill with just 25 seconds remaining in the game.
