Cornell Upends Knights 2-1, Sets Up Clarkson For First Round Single Elimination Game

Potsdam, NY – A 4-on-4 score by Delaney Fleming early in the third period proved to be the difference as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Cornell University in the regular-season ECAC Hockey finale on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights moved to 20-11-3 overall and 13-7-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while Cornell elevated itself to the fourth spot in the league standings at 14-7-1 and 18-10-2 overall. Clarkson will now have to participate in a first round single-elimination game against Union College next weekend.

The two teams spent the opening 10 minutes feeling one another out, with the best scoring chance for Clarkson coming near the midway point of the frame when Sara Manness got loose in the slot and was denied on a backhand by the pad of Annelies Bergmann before being covered up by the Cornell netminder. Cornell had a few chances thanks to two power plays, and the first 45 seconds of the opening player advantage was particularly fruitful with four solid chances on the Clarkson goal. However, all of those were denied by Arianne Leblanc, and the final 1:15 of that first power play was effectively killed off by the Knights with lengthy tie-ups.

In the second period, it was Cornell that needed to kill off multiple power plays, as the Big Red were whistled for three infractions in a stretch of seven minutes. However, it was the Big Red that would end up on the scoreboard due to a penalty late in the period. Following a cross-checking call around the 16-minute mark, Cornell took about 50 seconds to score, winning a battle for the puck along the left side boards. A pass from the top of the left circle went to the dot in the right circle, creating a one-timer opportunity for Karel Prefontaine and she converted for the game's opening goal at 16:51.

Clarkson tied the game in the final seconds of the second period, though the opportunity took plenty of time to develop. Cornell was whistled for a delayed penalty and the Knights adeptly kept control of the puck, waiting for an opportunity to develop, including retreating to their own end of the rink to set up a final rush, with the worst outcome being a prolonged power play at the start of the third. From the opposite end, two passes along the right side turned into a shot by Lara Beecher from the right circle. Her attempt hit the post, then went off the back of Bergmann and trickled through the crease on its side before just slipping over the goal line on its side before a Cornell player could clear it out.

With the game tied 1-1 into the third, what proved to be the game-winning goal came with extra open ice via a 4-on-4. Cornell had one shot that rung off the crossbar hard enough to bounce and slide all the way into the neutral zone, but shortly thereafter the Big Red were able to score late before the two penalties would expire. Three Cornell skaters circled around the slot and the right side of the offensive zone, waiting for an opportunity to open up. A backhand pass along the right side boards was shuffled over to Delaney Fleming, who wristed a forehand shot on goal, going high on the short side at 5:03 to put the score at 2-1.

Clarkson looked for a prolonged opportunity to tie the game when they pulled Leblanc with just under three minutes to go, but a penalty was called on the Knights when it appeared as if Cornell might win a race for the puck in open ice and have a good shot on the empty net. Clarkson had to play the last two minutes killing off a Cornell power play and ultimately ended up on the short end of the one-goal gap.

Clarkson outshot Cornell 64-52 in terms of total attempts and also 33-30 in shots on goal. The Knights were scoreless in three power play chances while Cornell was 1-for-5. Leblanc finished with 28 saves for Clarkson and Bergmann had 32 stops for Cornell.
