Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Slow Start Puts Knights in Early Hole Versus Union, Fall 2-1 in ECAC Playoffs

Potsdam, NY – Emma Rheaume enjoyed the game of her collegiate career, stopping 39 shots for Union College, as the Garnet Chargers put together one of the most shocking upsets in ECAC Hockey playoff history with a 2-1 win over the 12th-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team on Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights fell to 20-12-3 overall while Union edged up to 11-20-3. It was the first win for Union against the Green and Gold in over a decade, ending a streak of 27 straight wins by Clarkson and helping the Garnet Chargers move their record to 2-43 all-time against the Knights. It was also only the sixth time in history between the two teams that the game was decided by only a single goal.

Clarkson did not get off to the start it was hoping for as the underdog Garnet Chargers got an early 2-0 lead in the opening period. The Knights nearly got on the scoreboard around the seven-minute mark when Sara Manness hit the crossbar from the right circle, but while the teams were going for the loose puck, Clarkson was whistled for a penalty. That power play chance proved key to put Union in the driver's seat early on, as Emma Fulawka took a sharp angle shot from the bottom of the left circle only to be denied by Arianne Leblanc. However, the puck hit the pad of Leblanc and slid right to the stick of Karianne Engelbert just a few feet outside the crease, and she knocked in the easy rebound at 7:30, only 26 seconds into the extra skater opportunity.

Union scored a second time exactly three minutes later in what looked like an empty offensive chance. The Garnet Chargers skated in 2-on-3 with Clarkson defenders trailing as well and putting Union at a massive disadvantage. Union used that to its advantage, gaining possession behind the net and waiting for its skaters to fill the lanes. Engelbert did just that, flipping a pass to Megan Duplantie in front, and Duplantie scored from nearly the same spot as Union's first goal, this time hitting the puck over the shoulder of Leblanc at 10:30.

Clarkson came back with a power play goal of its own late in the period. Sara Manness reentered the zone with some pace, drawing a number of Union defenders towards her. However, she carried the puck deeper than the defense anticipated, leaving space for a centering pass back into the slot for Janelle Evans, and she ripped a shot in at 18:07, cutting the deficit in half. Keira Hurry also picked up an assist on the Clarkson goal.

The second period was relatively quiet in terms of scoring chances for either team as the defenses interrupted opportunities before they could truly develop, while second chances were few and far between. Each team had one power play opportunity in the period and Clarkson had the better shift, including a fast skate up the ice by Sara Manness, but she was stuffed on the right side of the crease near the end of the power play. Clarkson finished the period with a 23-13 edge in total shots and an 11-7 lead in shots on goal, similar to the margins (16-9, 10-6) from the first that were also in the Knights' favor.

Just a few minutes into the third period, Clarkson nearly tied the game on a centering pass that took so many bounces it would have made a Rube Goldberg machine proud. From along the left side boards, Megan McKay tried to get the offense going with a centering pass into the slot, but it hit a Union stick and then the body of Manon le Scodan in front. From there, the puck hit the top of Emma Rheaume's mask, bouncing backwards and hitting the crossbar and then hitting the back of Rheaume's mask again and down the pads along her neck. Then the skill for the goaltender came in, as she reached around with her left glove and trapped the puck against her back, sliding away from the goal line and ending the chance.

Near the midpoint of the third, Clarkson went on the power play and had six shots on the Union goal, with one getting blocked, three going wide, and two more stopped by Rheaume. An icing call with 5:07 remaining saw Union take a timeout to regroup and get some fresh legs underneath its defenders, and off the opening draw in the Union end, Clarkson once again challenged Rheaume, getting two shots on net before the netminder lost her stick. A few more attempts went wide or were blocked before she smothered the puck and ended the threat.

The Knights had one more good chance in the final two minutes when Lara Beecher broke away from the pack for a one-one-one after a pass from the neutral zone saw her all alone at the blue line. Beecher skated in and tried to go to her forehand, but Rheaume made one last outstanding save, going to the ground with a split and keeping the puck out of the net with 1:50 left in the contest.

Clarkson finished with a 77-29 edge in total shots and a 40-17 lead in shots on goal. Rheaume ended with 39 stops and Leblanc had 15 saves. Each team scored once on the power play.
