or the first time in seven meetings, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team lost to rival St. Lawrence, falling 2-1 on Friday night.
Clarkson is now 2-1-0 on the season while the Saints improve to 3-0-0.
"Even though there wasn't a whole lot of flow to the game tonight we need to do a better job tomorrow bringing some energy and keeping things simple," said Head Coach
Matt Desrosiers. "I thought we did a good job in the first period on the penalty kill but then made a couple mistakes in the second that ended up in the back of our net. All night we looked out of sync even strength and had a tough time generating many quality scoring chances. We will need to refocus heading into tomorrow's game at Cheel and bring a much better effort if we want to come away with a win."
Neither team was able to score in the first period and so Loren Gabel's goal just 2:37 into the second period opened the scoring and gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead.
St. Lawrence answered with two consecutive power-play goals. First, Brooke Webster scored off a pass from Kennedy Marchment at 5:42. Less than a minute later, at 6:14, Marchment assisted Kirsten Padalis who scored to give the Saints the lead.
Clarkson tried to score a second goal to tie the game, but the Golden Knights' 10 shots in the final period were all saved by St. Lawrence goaltender Grace Harrison.
St. Lawrence finished with a 26-19 edge in shots. The Saints converted two of their seven man-advantage opportunities while Clarkson failed to score on all eight of its power-plays. Shea Tiley made 24 stops for Clarkson while Harrison finished with 18 for St. Lawrence.
Clarkson will immediately have a chance to avenge the loss as the two teams return to Potsdam for a 3:00 pm game on Saturday afternoon. Clarkson will be trying to extend an 11 game undefeated streak against St. Lawrence in Cheel Arena.
