Women's Hockey Looks to Bounce Back at New Hampshire

PDF of weekly release

After two close losses to the top-ranked team in the country, the eighth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team will try to bounce back against New Hampshire this weekend. The Golden Knights will face the Wildcats on the Olympic ice sheet at the Whittemore Center, home of last year's NCAA Frozen Four, on Saturday and Sunday. Both games are 2:00 p.m. faceoffs.

Led by ninth-year head coach Matt Desrosiers and assistant coaches Britni Smith and Tony Maci, the Golden Knights have opened the season with a 2-3-1 record. It is the slowest start for Clarkson since the Green and Gold started 2-4-2 in the 2008-2009 season.

For the first time in program history, Clarkson played host to perennial power Wisconsin last weekend at Cheel Arena. On Friday, Clarkson took a 2-1 lead into the third period, but a Wisconsin goal tied the game and allowed the Badgers to score the game-winning goal in overtime. On Saturday, Clarkson was tied with Wisconsin after two periods, but Wisconsin scored three goals in the final frame to win 4-1.

On Friday, Shea Tiley had one of the biggest statistical games of her career. The junior netminder made 38 stops, including 18 in the third quarter which ties her career high. She followed that up with 24 saves in the loss on Saturday. Tiley's career save percentage of .933 is first all-time at Clarkson as is her goals against average of 1.47.

On Saturday, assistant captain Geneveieve Bannon recorded an assist on Josiane Pozzebon's goal. The assist represented the 100th career point for Bannon who becomes the 12th player to reach the century mark. She is now tied with former teammate Olivia Howe '16 for 12th all-time on the Clarkson career points list. Also moving up on that list is captain Cayley Mercer who has 120 career points after a goal and an assist on Friday afternoon. She passed Juana Baribeau '12 for sixth all-time and is just one point behind Melissa Waldie '11 for fifth. Mercer and Bannon are two of the seven members of the 2014 National Championship team that finished their career with at least 100 points.

Although seeing Mercer at the top of the team points list is not surprising as she has led the team the last two seasons, the two players joining there are. Senior Corie Jacobson and Pozzebon are both off to hot starts from the blueline. Jacobson and Pozzebon each have four points with Jacobson scoring two goals and adding two assists while Pozzebon has a team-high three goals and one assist. Jacobson has been remarkably accurate so far as she has two goals on two shots and needs just two more points to tie her single season career high. Pozzebon shares the team lead in power-play goals with classmate Rhyen McGill as each have notched two. That puts the pair in a tie for sixth in the country in the category. Jacobson and Pozzebon are also tied for 17th nationally in points among defensemen.

Clarkson lost both games in a weekend series for just the first time since losing two games to Boston University on October 17th and 18th of 2014. It is also the first time that Clarkson is on a four-game winless streak since a five game such span between February 2nd and February 15th in 2011.

New Hampshire comes into the weekend with a 1-5-0 overall record and a 1-2-0 HEA mark. The Wildcats started the season with five straight losses, but are coming off a 6-2 win over Merrimack. New Hampshire has already taken on two ECAC opponents, falling to Colgate 4-2 and 3-1 as well as losing to Quinnipiac 3-0. New Hampshire is tied for 19th nationally in scoring offense, averaging 1.83 goals per game while allowing 3.50 per game, a rate that is tied for 25th in the country. The Wildcats have just two power-play goals in 24 opportunities for a conversion rate of just 8.3%.  They are 11th in the country in penalty kill though, as they have killed 89.7% of opponents' tries.

Jonna Curtis is the top scorer for New Hampshire with six points on four goals and two assists. Just behind her is Carlee Turner who has four points in her rookie season. Turner is tied for 13th nationally in points per game among rookies. In goal, Hilary Cashin and Kyra Smith have split time, with each playing three games. Cashin has the slightly better stats so far with a save percentage of .909, goals against average of 2.36, and record of 1-2-0 better than Smith's rates of .907, 3.72, and 0-3-0 respectively.

Clarkson has a 4-2-0 all-time record against the Wildcats and have won three in a row. Two of the wins came last year in Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights took a 4-2 win followed by a 6-4 victory with both games taking place in Cheel Arena.  Mercer had hat tricks in both games for six points in two games. Bannon had a pair of assists in each win while Loren Gabel had a career high three points in the 6-4 win to go along with a goal in the 4-2 victory.

The two teams will meet on Saturday October 22nd and Sunday October 23rd, with the puck dropping at 2:00 pm on both days.
