Senior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) scored late in overtime and lifted the Clarkson University Women’s hockey team to a key victory in ECAC Hockey play as the Golden Knights defeated Yale University 2-1 at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

Winners of two of their last three games, the Golden Knights improved their record to 8-13-3 overall and took over sole possession of eighth place in the league standings with a 5-6-1 ECAC Hockey mark. The Knights host Brown on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Clarkson’s second all-time leading scorer, Waldie took a pass off the left boards from junior Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) and fired in a wrist shot from the circle over the glove of the Bulldogs’ goaltender Jackee Snikeris, just under the crossbar for her second game-winner of the season. Freshman Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) also assisted. Waldie has tallied 62 career goals and 113 points, including a team-high 10 goals and six assists this season.

Yale (4-6-1, 5-11-2) forced the extra session when Aurora Kennedy scored on a shot through a screen at 16:02 of the third period.

Senior Daris Tendler (Verwood, SASK) closed out a strong first period for the Golden Knights scoring on a partial breakaway for her second goal of the season with just 26 seconds remaining in the stanza for the first goal of the contest. Juniors Katelyn Ptolemy (Dinsmore, SASK) and Brittany Mulligan (London, ONT) assisted.

The Knights outshot the Bulldogs 39-24. Freshman Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) posted her second straight win and improved her record in the Clarkson net to 4-4-2 behind a 23-save effort.

Clarkson was 0-of-3 on the power play while Yale went o-of-4 with the extra skater.
