Poughkeepsie, NY – With three goals in the first half, Vassar College took down the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team 3-0 in Liberty League action Sunday afternoon at Gordon Field.
The Golden Knights finished the conference schedule with a record of 1-6-0 and are now 3-10-2 overall. Clarkson will close out the regular season on Thursday against Potsdam State. The Brewers have won four straight to improve to 9-7-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the Liberty League.
Following a number of close calls, Carolyn Demougeot found the back of the net in the 28th minute as Rachel Shea sent a through ball towards the left side. Demougeot raced on to the pass, tapped the ball past a Clarkson defender and unleashed a shot past Clarkson keeper Stephanie Collins (Colton, NY) for the goal.
Demougeot added a second goal with 6:46 to play in the half following a corner kick from Keiko Kurita. Allison McManis got a head on the initial offering, but her shot bounced off the cross bar. Demougeot was there for the rebound, winning the loose ball and tapping it into the net.
The Brewers closed out the scoring with just 6.3 seconds left remaining on the clock in the first half, as they again capitalized on a corner kick. Kurita sent a perfect ball into the box and freshman Sabrina Martins one-timed a shot for her first collegiate goal.
The Golden Knights got their best opportunity with a little over 20 minutes to play in the game as sophomore Courtney Green (Rochester, NY) sent a great shot on net from the right side. Freshman goalie Ali Higgins made a spectacular one-handed block, leaping backwards and falling to the ground. Although the ball trickled out of her hands, Higgins was able to corral it before any Clarkson player could get a foot on it.
The Brewers outshot the Golden Knights 18-8 and took six corner kicks to Clarkson’s two. Higgins made five saves as she improved to 5-5, while Collins made eight saves in the loss.
