Knights Fall at Ithaca, 2-0

Ithaca, NY – Two second-half goals proved to be the difference as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team suffered a 2-0 Liberty League defeat at the hands of Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 8-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the Liberty League while Ithaca pushed its way past Clarkson in the league standings in points on at 3-2-2 in conference and 7-3-4 overall. Clarkson closes out the regular season next Saturday at home against Vassar College.

There was little in the way of shots in the first half as the first attempt took more than 15 minutes for the Bombers and both of their attempts in the first 45 went high. Clarkson also missed outside frame, but one shot late from about 25 yards out went on frame, but it was an easy save by Ithaca's Katrina Varnum.

The pressure began to increase in the second half for the Bombers, though the first attempt on goal from Ella Intrieri was punched away in the first 30 seconds, an important clear as another Golden Knight was bearing down to score off a header or any misplay. Just a few minutes later, Ithaca picked up its first goal of the contest as they played the ball through the midfield and down the right side. One pass went into space and created on a 2-on-1 situation with Mia Medearis surging deep into the Clarkson end. She found space and Sophie White filling the center of the field and sent a cross back into the box, where White was able to tap in the ball from the top of the six in stride. Emma Fleming got a hand on the shot, but not quite enough as it found the back of the net at 47:54.

The Bombers picked up an insurance goal in the final 13 minutes on a similar design as the first when Ella Shorkey again went deep down the right side, nearly to the goal line. She then tried to go back to the middle and a Clarkson defender was able to get a heel on the pass to slow it up, but it did not clear the ball and Jayne Bogle was able to step into a shot from the penalty stripe and score at 77:46.

Ithaca finished with a 14-5 edge in shots, with the majority of that advantage coming in the final 45 minutes. The Bombers led 5-2 in shots on goal and 6-2 in corners. Kenzie Roth played the first 43 minutes and did not make a save for Clarkson and Emma Fleming came on for the final 47 minutes to make three stops. Katrina Varnum had two saves for the Bombers.
