4th-Ranked Golden Knights Travel to Vermont for Season's First Road Trip

Making its first road trip of the season, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team will look to continue its early season roll that has propelled the Golden Knights to near the top of the national polls. The Green and Gold, guided by co-head coaches Shannon and Matt Desrosiers, will take their undefeated record and lofty rankings to Burlington, VT this weekend as they battle the University of Vermont in Gutterson Fieldhouse on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Clarkson, which plays its first eight games of the 2009-10 campaign against Hockey East foes, owns a 3-0-1 record. Led by senior captain Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) and senior assistant captain Carlee Eusepi (Oakville, ONT), Clarkson is ranked fourth in both the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll and the USCHO.com Poll, its highest rating ever. Last weekend at Cheel Arena, the Knights earned a 3-2 overtime victory against Providence College and then gained their first shutout of the season with a 4-0 blanking of the University of Connecticut.

After this weekend’s series at Vermont, the Green and Gold will close out the non-league portion of the their schedule against Hockey East foes when they host the University of New Hampshire and Boston University, ranked 3rd and 9th in this week’s polls, respectively, in Potsdam on October 23-24.

By helping Clarkson gain a sweep of the Hockey East foes this past weekend, junior Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) and sophomore Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) were honored as ECAC Hockey weekly All-Stars. For the second consecutive week, Dahm was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week. Baribeau, a left wing, earned ECAC Hockey Player of the Week accolades.

Dahm posted a .994 save% and a 0.99 GAA through 121 minutes in the weekend wins over Providence and the University of Connecticut. She recorded her first shutout of the season and 11th career whitewash with a 16-save effort in the victory over UConn. Dahm gained her second career overtime win with an 18-save outing in the triumph Friday over Providence, including a key stop in the extra session.

Baribeau powered the Knights offense against the Friars in the overtime win. Her third career game-winner came 1:26 into the extra session. She posted a +3 and had nine shots in the weekend sweep of Hockey East foes.

Junior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) has scored at least one goal in three of the first four games and leads Clarkson in scoring with four goals and five points. Senior transfer Dominique Thibault (L’Original, ONT) also has five points on two goals and three assists. Baribeau (3-1), Selina (1-3) and freshman defenseman Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) (0-4) all have four points.

The Knights have out scored their opponents 13-4. Clarkson is hitting at 17.6% (3-17) on the power play, and has excelled in shorthanded situations, limiting the opponents to just one power-play marker in 17 chances.

The Catamounts of Vermont also enter the weekend undefeated after sweeping Union in Burlington last Friday and Saturday. Guided by head coach Tim Bothwell, UVM shutout the Dutchwomen 2-0 in the season opener and skated past Union 4-1 the next day. Vermont is in the midst of an eight-game home stand at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The Series:
After skating to a 1-1 tie against Vermont in its third game as an NCAA program on October 25, 2003, Clarkson has won 11 straight games over the Catamounts, holding a commanding 11-0-1 lead in their all-time series. The Knights have out scored the Catamounts 48-9 and have shut out Vermont five times. Clarkson is 5-0- against the Cats at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington. Last season, the Green and Gold swept Vermont, winning 4-2 (Clarkson’s 100th all-time victory) and 9-1at Cheel Arena on November 29-30.
