Catterall Joins Century Club, Manness Scores in OT to Down Colgate, 4-3

Potsdam, NY – Sena Catterall scored her 100th career point and the game-tying goal in the final minute to set up a situation where Kate Manness could score the game-winning goal in overtime as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team picked up a 4-3 victory over Colgate Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 20-10-3 overall and 13-6-2 in ECAC play, while the Raiders fell to 17-14-1 and 12-8-1. Clarkson looks to lock up a first-round bye and home ice for the quarterfinals when the team takes on Cornell on Saturday.

The game-winning goal came a few minutes into the overtime session. After an offsides call sent the faceoff into the neutral zone, Sara Manness and Alexia Aubin dueled for possession, with Aubin eventually kicking the puck towards the boards with her skate. Kate Manness did not hesitate going for the loose puck on the left boards and immediately steamed forward through the slot, slowing with a slight toe drag at the end and finding enough daylight to shoot in close from the bottom of the right circle, tallying the game-winner at 2:08 in overtime.

There were not many grade 'A' scoring chances at the start of the contest, but each team picked up a power play opportunity in the second half of the opening frame. Clarkson posted four shots on goal during its extra-skater chance, with a few challenging Colgate goaltender Brooke Davis. A few moments later Colgate had its opportunity to be up a skater, but the Raiders did not get as many chances as the Knights had, putting only one on goal.

Clarkson broke through late in the first period after a lengthy run of possession between the offensive zone and the neutral zone just over the blue line. Sara Manness had the puck behind the net and passed it into the slot, though it was slowed down somewhat by the stick of a Colgate defender. That may have actually helped set up Morgan Walton a bit better as she was able to skate closer for her wrist shot, beating Davis high on her stick side at 18:51.

The Raiders tied the game only 13 seconds later on a funky bounce. What looked like a harmless dump in by Colgate instead hit a weird spot off the boards and snuck back out to the crease, forcing Arianne Leblanc to make a play on the puck. It hit her stick and then was knocked in off the body of Chloe Goofers for a 1-1 tie at 19:04.

Clarkson regained the advantage early on in the second period in a special way as Sena Catterall recorded her 100th career point with a goal. After some extended pressure around the net by the Knights, Rhea Hicks grabbed the loose puck and sent it to the left point for Keira Hurry. The junior defender took a shot from just inside the blue line and Sena Catterall redirected the attempt just enough to sneak past Davis, making it 2-1 at 5:49.

The battle of the goalies continued through the rest of the second period and into the third as each of the defenses performed well, but it was another unfortunate ricochet that would allow Colgate to tie the game for a second time. Clarkson picked up possession in the neutral zone and it looked like Madison Chantler wanted to head back into her own defensive zone to regroup for an attack in the other direction. On her way into the zone, the puck ended up nicking the skate of one of the linesmen along the boards, and that was enough for Colgate's trailing defender Madeline Palumbo to pick up the puck, and she quickly took a wrist shot before the Knights' defense could recover, knotting the game at 2-2 at 7:05.

Shortly after the second goal, Leblanc made some impressive saves in traffic to make sure the game stayed tied. However, a late power play opportunity for Clarkson turned into a shorthanded goal for the Raiders. The Knights skated in hard on the left side and for a short shot, but it ended up hitting off the back glass hard. Colgate was smart to transition quickly the other way with some speed once the puck escaped the zone, creating a 2-on-1. Elyssa Biederman came in on the left side and slid a pass through the slot to the opposite right circle, as Emma Pais scored on the one-timer at 14:33.

An additional penalty for Colgate was whistled on Biederman with a little under four minutes to go in the contest, creating a chance where the Knights could be up an extra skater for the remainder of the game due to the power play and with an empty net. That proved to be the case as Clarkson came up empty on the power play despite a post being rung by Lara Beecher. Colgate did the same at the other end with the empty net when Alexis Petford's try hit the outer portion of the iron. That miss, however, created an odd carom and sent the Knights skating with speed in the other direction. Megan McKay took a seemingly innocuous shot at the net with a soft backhand, but it was at an odd enough angle that Davis could only save it with her stick. That allowed for an easy rebound for Catterall and she crashed the net hard for the game-tying score with only 49 seconds left in regulation.

Clarkson had a 64-45 edge in total shot attempts, but it was Colgate that led in shots on goal at 30-26. Neither team scored on the power play, as the Knights came up empty three times and Colgate was 0-for-1. Leblanc finished with 27 saves for the Knights and Davis had 22 stops for the Raiders.
