Spoth and Burchett in Top Five at Halfway Point of SLU Invitational

Canton, NY – Senior Eric Spoth scored four straight birdies in the first five holes on Saturday to headline the Clarkson University Golf team's effort in the St. Lawrence Invitational held at the par-72 Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course.

Through the first 18 holes, the Golden Knights sit in second place with a score of 290, seven strokes off the pace of St. Lawrence (283) and tied with Nazareth (290). Just behind the top three are Hobart (294), New York University (301) and Oswego State (309).

Spoth carded a 34 on the front nine with birdies on the second, third, fourth, and fifth holes before cooling off somewhat on the back nine where he still had a 37 to finish at one-under with a 71. He also picked up birdie on the par-five 11th hole.

One shot behind Spoth, who was in fourth place among the 88 golfers, was freshman Tyler Burchett. The newcomer to the collegiate game shot an even par-72 to tie for fifth at the halfway point of the tournament. Burchett had birdies on the fourth, and finished strong with birdies on 15 and 18.

Luke Weisiger was next for Clarkson with a 73, scoring five birdies as well. He was one-under on the first, fourth, sixth, and ninth holes and finished with one more on number-18. Weisiger was at 34 on the front nine and 39 on the back.

One could have picked either Tyler Yacawych or Brian Secor to round out the team score, as each shot 74. Yacawych had 37 on the front and 37 on the back with birdies on the fourth and seventh holes at the start and then again on number-14. Secor had three straight birdies, picking one up on the 9th, 10th, and 11th holes. Each was tied for 12th in the tournament on day one.

Other strong finishers for Clarkson were Jace Dutch, who tied for 24th with a score of 76 and Bryce Terborgh, who tied for 31st with a 77. Sam Dupont (78), Mario Alvarez Carreras (79), and Vincent Magee (79) were each under 80, while Alex Sweeney, Ty Lefebvre, Sam Schultz, and Jon Tiderencel each shot 80. Nate Cencetti (83) and Joey Walsh (86) rounded out Clarkson's entrants.
