Weisiger Leads Castleton Invitational After Day One

Rutland, VT – Senior Luke Weisiger sits atop the leader board for the Clarkson University Golf team at the halfway point of the Castleton Invitational, as the Golden Knights finished the opening round just one-over par at the par-70 Rutland Country Club.

The Golden Knights are in second place through the first day of the tournament, just one-over par with a score of 281, four strokes off the pace set by Southern Maine. Day two will likely be a battle against only the leaders in the tournament, as the third-place team is 26 strokes behind Clarkson and 30 off the pace overall. Tee times begin at 11:00 am on Sunday.

Weisiger had one of the most dominant rounds in recent memory for Clarkson, recording seven birdies and shooting four-under to lead the field of 45 golfers, but just one ahead of two golfers from Southern Maine and two strokes ahead of teammate Tyler Burchett. Weisiger recorded three birdies on the front for a 33 and then had four on the back for another 33, going one-under on each of the final two holes of course.

Burchett wasn't far off Weisiger's pace but did his damage in an entirely different way. He had just one birdie on the front nine and then one more on the last hole of the course, but he did record an eagle on the par-five, 539-yard 13th hole. Burchett was three-under on the course's two par-fives.

Sam DuPont, fresh off his win at SUNY Canton on Tuesday, tied for seventh at the midway point of the tournament, shooting three-over thanks to a pair of birdies early on in the day and then one more on the 14th hole, carding a 73.

Eric Spoth rounded out Clarkson's team score with a four-over 74, scoring 36 on the front and then 38 on the back. He had birdies on the fourth and seventh holes on the front nine and then picked one more up on the opening hole of the back nine, putting him in a tie for 10th. Tyler Yacawych was just one stroke behind Spoth with a 75, but had his score dropped from the team tally. He shot 39 on the front and then scored a 36 on the back, picking up a single birdie on the 11th hole and placing him in the top-third of the field.
