CU Baseball Preview - vs St. Lawrence University (4/24-25)

Entering a final, all-important Liberty League weekend of the season, the Clarkson University Baseball team takes on local rivals St. Lawrence University, Friday and Saturday, with a chance to solidify a spot in the postseason.

The Series: Clarkson will host the single meeting on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before both teams square-off in a doubleheader on Saturday in Canton. The Golden Knights will need to sweep the three-game set in order to advance to the Liberty League postseason next weekend. Clarkson swept the Saints in the series last year with 4-2 and 15-11 wins in Potsdam and a 13-11 win at SLU. 

Key Stats for Clarkson (16-13, 7-8 Liberty League): As a team the Golden Knights rank eighth in the league in batting average (.265) and sixth with a 5.69 ERA on the mound. Jacob Shirley was named as the Liberty League Pitcher of the Week for his performance last weekend against University of Rochester as the junior struck out nine while giving up just one run in a nine-inning complete game. Shirley is tied for first in the league with 37 strikeouts through 30.1 innings pitched in conference play. The Knights will look for more consistency in the field though as the defense has registered 15 errors over the past three outings. 

Key Stats for St. Lawrence (13-14, 6-8 Liberty League): The Saints have seen some success in the league this year, sweeping University of Rochester in a three-game set over the first weekend in April and taking two of three from RIT the weekend before. John Gannon ranks fourth in the league in conference batting average (.442) with 19 hits and 10 RBIs in 43 plate appearances. Overall, the senior leads the team with 33 hits including 10 doubles and a home run with a .535 slugging percentage. On the mound, David Zuhlsdorf leads the pitching staff with 34 strikeouts through seven starts but owns a 6.89 ERA having given up 12 earned runs over his last three starts.
