Knights Claim Key Win Over Yale, 4-1

Potsdam, NY – Three second-period goals and a standout performance from goaltender Shane Soderwall gave the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team a 4-1 win over Yale University Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights picked up the key win over Yale for a season sweep, giving Clarkson the additional tie-breaker, if necessary, and improving the Green and Gold's record to 13-15-3 overall and 7-9-3 in ECAC play. The Bulldogs fell to 8-18-1 and 7-11-1. Clarkson closes out the home portion of its schedule on Saturday when the team hosts Brown University.

Each team had its chances in the first period as three penalties put the teams up a skater. Yale had the first two, but did do much with the chances, recording just a blocked shot on its first attempt and only one shot, though this one was on goal, in its second chance. Clarkson was a little better but also came up empty, having one shot saved and two more blocked.

Shortly after the conclusion of the Clarkson power play late in the period, the Knights did get on the scoreboard with a strong all-around effort. Conyr Hellyer had a shot on the doorstep that was denied by the Yale goaltender Noah Pak. However, the attempted clear was stopped by Matthew Mayich near the blue line on the left side and he quickly restarted the Knights' offense with a pass to Erik Bargholtz. He followed with a centering pass to Jace Letourneau in the slot, and his wrister found an open spot for a goal at 15:58 in the first.

Clarkson picked up a key score early on in the second period as Tate Taylor caught the Bulldogs on a change. After the puck was cleared out of the Clarkson zone by Yale, it sent the Knights chasing the puck in their own defensive zone while Yale altered its lines. Taylor sent a lengthy pass up ice and found Ryan Bottrill at the blue line. Owen Van Steensel entered the zone next and was set up for a one-timer near the left circle, but instead held onto the puck and skated through the slot for a backhand at 3:47, making it 2-0.

The Knights picked up another goal near the midway mark of the period when Tate Taylor wristed a shot from the right point and two of his teammates made contact with the puck on the redirection, with it first hitting the stick of Justin Cote and then tapping the puck of Remi Gelinas, with both players celebrating the score at 12:35.

Yale finally got on the board in the final two minutes of the period, only to see Clarkson regain its three-goal advantage less than a minute later. The Bulldogs got their first tally of the game when Zach Wagnon ripped a one-timer from the point, only to be stopped by Clarkson goalie Shane Soderwall. However, the rebound went off his pad and right to the stick of Iisai Pesonon on the left side of the crease where he knocked it in at 18:42.

Talon Sigurdson did a solid job of keeping the puck in the Yale defensive zone by pinning a Bulldog up against the boards on the right side. That allowed Conyr Hellyer to sneak over and dig the puck out, and one quick stick move later, he sent a pass near the left circle for Ty Brassington, and the defenseman connected with a one-timer at 19:26.

The fourth goal late in the second period altered Clarkson's attack in the third as the Knights did not push the offense at the same pace as the first two periods, especially with the minutes falling off the clock late in the contest. Yale did get some life with a power play chance with under five minutes to go and then an additional penalty giving the Bulldogs a 5-on-3 with just 3:21 left in the contest. Clarkson killed off 57 seconds of the penalty while on the 5-on-3 thanks to a save from Soderwall and another attempt going off the side of the post, but the Bulldogs were whistled for interference as the teams were about to go back to 5-on-4. Clarkson then killed off the 4-on-4 stretch and went on the power play itself, but was content to run clock rather than try for a fifth score.

Clarkson ended the game with a 66-40 lead in total shots, though the shots on goal tally was considerably closer at 32-25. Both teams were scoreless on the power play. Soderwall finished with 24 saves and Pak stopped 28 shots for Yale.
