Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Sarsland Scores in Overtime to Lift Clarkson Past Brown, 4-3

Potsdam, NY - Tristan Sarsland utilized a couple of screens and possibly a defender's skate in overtime to net the game-winner as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team picked up 4-3 victory in extra time to sweep its final regular season home weekend at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 14-15-3 overall and 8-9-3 in ECAC Hockey entering the final weekend of the season, while Brown fell to 5-21-2 and 4-14-2. Clarkson closes out the regular season on the road against Colgate and Cornell.

A game-tying goal in the final minute by Brown forced the game into overtime, but Clarkson dominated the 3-on-3 session with extended possession and a key goal following a quick regroup. Sarsland brought the puck into the zone with the two teams essentially skating 2-on-2, and he brought the puck down towards the bottom of the right circle. He then wristed a shot with a tough angle, allowing Jared Mangan and a Brown defender to skate through and create a bit of a screen. The puck snuck past the Brown goalie and Mangan pointed to his teammate for confirmation that his shot was true, as the Knights tallied the game-winner at 2:19 in overtime.

Thing had not started great for Clarkson at the onset of the contest when Brown nearly converted before everyone had taken their seats. A bounce off a player near the neutral zone created a breakaway chance for Ryan St. Louis just 20 seconds into the game, but fortunately for Clarkson, Shane Soderwall was able to stop the try with his right leg pad and he covered up the puck before another chance could be had.

Roughly seven minutes later the same player once again had a breakaway chance, this time while the Bears were shorthanded. On the power play in the Brown defensive zone, Clarkson appeared to have won the faceoff going backward for a set up, but instead the puck leaked out of the zone where St. Louis was able to win the race in the neutral zone. He then skated in and used the same strategy as he did in his first attempt, going to his forehand, but this time finding the back of the net at 7:59.

Still on the power play, Clarkson had some opportunities, skating on a 5-on-3 for 1:15 and then another 45 seconds at 5-on-4, but none went through the Brown defense. That said, just seconds after the power play concluded, Luka Sukovic took a shot from the right point which might have gone wide had it not been impeded, but a redirection off the shin guard of Jace Letourneau sent it back on target and past Brown goalie Tyler Shea at 10:44.

It looked like the game might remain tied heading into the first intermission, but Brown was able to claim the momentum heading into the locker room with a goal in the final 90 seconds. An attempted clear around the boards was collected by Ben Poitras near the right point. He flung a seemingly harmless shot towards the cage, but the puck bounced to Ivan Zadvernyuk as he batted the puck out of the air and into the net at 18:56.

Each team had a solid chance at the start of the second period. Soderwall again had an outstanding saves against Charles Gollob in the first 90 seconds to keep the margin at one, and a few moments later Mael St. Denis almost scored while the Knights were shorthanded. During that power play, it was Clarkson that actually had the chances, registering three shots with two going on goal while Brown was empty despite being up a skater.

Clarkson used that momentum off the penalty kill to tie the game only a few moments later. Conyr Hellyer won a faceoff at the right dot in the Brown zone by simply kicking the puck backwards and Jared Mangan took no time in ripping a wrist shot past Shea at 6:21.

The Knights took their first lead of the contest, picking up a power play goal. The two teams skated 4-on-4 for a little under a minute, but eventually Clarkson was able to get their power play cooking on a textbook tic-tac-toe set-up. Ty Brassington was at the top of the slot and sent a pass to the bottom of the left circle for Tate Taylor. One more short pass to Justin Cote set up the freshman perfectly for a one-timer and the shot was ripped past Shea's right shoulder at 13:15.

The third period had two distinct stretches of dominance, with Clarkson outshooting Brown 16-3 for the first 10-plus minutes, and the Bears the controlling the play for the final eight-plus minutes with a 12-1 advantage. That 12th shot proved important for Brown as they visitors tied the game with 59 seconds left. Brown pulled its goalie for an extra attacker with a shade under three minutes to go in the contest, and Clarkson was unable to clear the zone for the next two minutes. Finally, Brown was able to knot the game up at 3-3 thanks to a rifle shot of a one-timer from Brian Nicholas with only 59 seconds left in the regulation.

Each team's goalie recorded 24 saves in the contest, with Soderwall recording that number and Shea following suit. Each team scored once on specialty teams, the Knights scoring on the power play and Brown recording a shorthanded goal.
