Knights Clinch Opening Round Home Playoff Berth with 4-1 Win Over Colgate

Hamilton, NY – Three third-period goals and a strong effort from Shane Soderwall helped the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team clinch a first-round home playoff game as the Golden Knights kept their winning streak alive with a 4-1 win over Colgate in ECAC Hockey play on Friday night.

The Golden Knights evened their overall mark at 15-5-3 and also returned to .500 in league play at 9-9-3. Colgate fell to 11-18-4 and 8-10-3 in conference games. With the win, the Knights pushed their league point total to 29, guaranteeing another game next weekend at Cheel Arena. Clarkson can either have the seventh seed or eighth seed in the playoffs depending on the outcome of Saturday's contests. Clarkson has a two-point edge over Colgate and also has a season sweep of the Raiders. Possible opponents for that single elimination game are RPI, Yale, and St. Lawrence.

There wasn't much in the way of extended possession for either team throughout the first period, though Clarkson flung 19 shots towards the Colgate goal during the opening 20 minutes with six making it on net. A late flurry from Colgate narrowed the gap in total attempts (19-14) and the Raiders ended up with a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Though each goaltender made solid saves to keep the game scoreless, the closest either team came to getting on the board was when Tate Taylor collected the puck after a faceoff win in the Colgate end with the Knights on the power play, but his shot from the top of the slot rung off the crossbar near the nine-minute mark.

Clarkson took little time getting on the scoreboard in the second period with Remi Gelinas finding the back of the net less than a minute in to the middle stanza. Colgate struggled to get the puck out of its defensive zone and even when the Raiders finally did, Justin Cote collected the puck just over the red line in the neutral zone and chipped a backhand off the boards and back into the zone. From there, Gelinas gained possession and ripped a shot from the top of the left circle only to be denied by Raiders netminder Reid Dyck, but the rebound came right back to the stick of Gelinas and the Colgate goaltender was unable to recover in time, as Gelinas went top shelf at 0:49 to make it 1-0.

Colgate responded almost immediately, scoring just a few minutes later on a quick transition. A turnover near the blue line turned into a quick shovel pass forward by Easton Wainwright gave Owen Neuharth a step on the Clarkson defense, and Neuharth was able to skate in unimpeded, going to the opposite post at 3:48 and tying the game up at 1-1.

Clarkson reclaimed the lead near the midway point of the period off a faceoff at center ice. A quick dump in forced Reid Dyck behind the net to collect the puck, but the Golden Knights defense caused a turnover with Jared Mangan quickly flipping in a backhand before Dyck could return to the crease, making it 2-1 at 8:15.

Only 74 seconds later, the Knights pushed their advantage to two goals with a strong shift in the Colgate end. The puck bounced around with not many clean looks, but Tristan Sarsland was able to gain possession near the top of the slot and quickly ripped a shot towards the cage where Mael St-Denis was able to redirect it at 9:29. The second assist went to Luka Sukovic.

The start of the third period was fairly choppy without numerous faceoffs and not a lot of extended play. That began to change after the first five minutes, as Clarkson began to take control with another healthy lead in shot attempts, helped by a power play opportunity around the six-minute mark. That would change after the media timeout as Shane Soderwall was called upon for several saves with a number coming in close.

Clarkson responded to that rush by the Raiders with a good defensive play that set up its fourth goal of the contest. With Colgate trying to maintain possession near the left side boards of the Clarkson zone, the Golden Knights squeezed off any passing lanes and created an odd-man rush in the other direction. It eventually evolved into a 2-on-0 as a pair of Knights had a half step on the Colgate defense. Justin Cote knocked in a cross into the slot from Tristan Sarsland, though it appeared as if Reid Dyck had made the save. However, the puck was still loose underneath his pads and when he tried to get out of his crouch, he ended up kicking the puck into the net at the 13:58 mark.

Just a few minutes later, Colgate tried to get back into the contest when the Knights were whistled for a penalty, pulling the goaltender at the same time for a two-skater advantage with a little over five minutes to play. Soderwall made a handful of solid stops despite the defensive disadvantage and Clarkson killed off the penalty. Shortly thereafter, a neutral zone draw saw Reid Dyck return to the Colgate crease, where he remained for the rest of the contest as Clarkson held on for the 4-1 win.

The Raiders finished with a 31-27 advantage in shots on goal thanks to their flurry in the final 10 minutes of the contest. Soderwall closed with 30 saves, while Dyck finished with 23.
