For the last few weeks, the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving team has been preparing for its most important event of the season as the Golden Knights and the rest of the conference descend upon Ithaca for the four-day Liberty League Championships.

The Men: A few records were broken during the regular season, even a few as early as the first semester, a rarity for the Golden Knights. Freshman Evan Paneras broke a pair of records in the butterfly events, topping a record from Jacob Baker in the 200 butterfly that was just a few years old and also besting the near 29-year-old record of Charlie Weisman in the 100 butterfly. Paneras has the second fastest seed time in the 100 butterfly and the fifth in the 200 butterfly, and he has the best chance of achieving an NCAA 'B' cut, though work would need to be done to reach the NCAA Championships. Paneras had a time of 49.94 seconds in the 100 butterfly in December, but the 'B' cut for the last three years has ranged from 48.63 seconds to 49.02 seconds. Similarly, his 200 butterfly time of 1:52.82 is in shouting distance of the 'B' cuts for that event, which have ranged from 1:49.88 to 1:50.85 in the last three seasons.

Andrew Sammons participated in two 'A' finals at the Liberty League Championships a year ago, ending up in seventh in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 breaststroke. He briefly held the record for the 200 breaststroke after his second-place preliminary time (2:05.34) and was even faster in his finals time later that day (2:04.17), but teammate Calvin Woolfolk topped him in the finals (2:03.88), giving Sammons a mark to shoot for at the championships.

Owen White also broke a record in the 400 individual medley last year in Ithaca, shaving off 10 seconds from his seed time to his record of 4:12.09. His seed time this year is 4:16.65, so he has a shot at his own standard once again. He will also be vying for the 200 individual medley record, held by Matt Szrama (1:54.38) from 2005. White's seed time of 1:57.62 puts him in striking distance of that record.

Casey Everett broke records in a pair of distance freestyle races a year ago, hitting new marks for his 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle. Everett's seed time is three seconds off his 500 freestyle time of a year ago. Similarly, Gavin Stuhler will be eyeing marks in the sprint freestyle races. His seed time of 21.70 might be a big ask to top former teammate Connor Tasselmeyer's mark of 20.55 seconds, but he has a chance of being the second quickest in the event, as Jerry Miller's 21.40 seconds stood for close to four decades before Tasselmeyer topped it. Mason Cartier will be looking to take down Al Catano's record in the 100 backstroke. Catano was the Liberty League Swimmer of the Year in 2014 thanks in part to a 51.41 time in the 100 backstroke, and Cartier comes in with a 53.15 seed time.

Gavin Cibelli has already qualified for the NCAA Regionals and he hopes to erase the names of Joe Kozlowski (1-meter, 466.55 points) and Brent Reid (3-meter, 449.55 points) from the Clarkson record books.

The Women: There won't be as many challengers for program records on the women's side, but the names will be repetitive. Sophomore diver Evelyn Vieira took little time to set records in the diving events for Clarkson last year and she has already broken three marks this season. The only record she hasn't broken this season is the 1-meter dive for championship events, though she came close with 337.80 seed points which was just shy of her 350.75 points in Ithaca a year ago.

The sophomore class will be further represented by Natasha Hurff, Fiona Reilly, and Aurora Zary. Hurff set the record for the 500 freestyle last season and broke the 1000 freestyle record at the end of January this year in Middlebury, setting her up for a run towards the one-year-old mark in the 1650 freestyle, set by Gabriela McSwieney. Reilly's seed time in the 500 freestyle a year ago was 5:20.09, which was easily topped by her preliminary time (5:15.62) and then toppled by her finals race (5:12.84). With a seed time this year that is 1.52 seconds faster than a year ago, she may be looking to make further adjustments to Clarkson's all-time standards.

Reilly broke the mark for the 200 individual medley last February, and both she and Zary have solid seed times to compete for 'A' finals spots. However, both swimmers may not compete in that event as they will be limited in the number of races in which they can compete, so it will be up to coach Marc Danin and his staff to figure out where to best place the swimmers to extract as many points as possible. Reilly has spots in the 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke, and 200 breaststroke, while Zary could also compete in the 400 individual medley and both the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Zary was just a couple of seconds short of the top time in the 200 backstroke a year ago.
