Carrabassett Valley, ME – Ariana Welter won the giant slalom race for the women as the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team had some highlights and disappointments on Saturday afternoon in the USCSA Eastern Regionals at Sugarloaf Mountain.

The Golden Knights' men eked out a second-place finish among 18 teams, topping UConn by .14 seconds in the team timing, while the Clarkson women had to settle for a tie 10th out of 16 teams. Clarkson is back in action on Sunday when the Knights and the rest of the teams compete in the slalom.

Welter had the top time in the opening run (51.65 seconds) and then had the second fastest time (54.75 seconds) for a combined time of 1:46.40, putting her atop the leaderboard, which totaled 70 participants. Classmate Elyse Donaghue was third after the first run (52.19 seconds) and her second run was the fourth fastest (55.15 seconds) for a collective time of 1:47.34, which was good enough for third in the field. Both Hannah Goetz and Lily Rogers did not finish their first run, but LilyAnn Fisher was 18th after her opening run in 56.37 seconds. Unfortunately for Clarkson, Fisher did not finish her second run, putting Clarkson outside of the team qualification for USCSA Nationals as the Knights had to use a ghost time of 2:51.51 for its team time.

Although Clarkson was without Gavin Ebert, who finished third in the MacConnell Division standings in the regular season, the Golden Knights' depth showed off on Saturday as the team still ended up in second place. Edouard Brochu placed seventh in the field of 79 total skiers with a collective time of 1:43.75. Aleksa Lalic had the fastest first run for the Knights, finishing his opening turn in sixth place (50.29 seconds), but ended up 10th overall in 1:44.18. Reed Martin jumped from the 22nd spot after his first trip down the hill to 14th overall with the 10th-fastest second run, completing his two trips in 1:45.72. James Tucker was a bit slower in his second turn, but still finished in 27th place overall in 1:49.72. Jackson Knobloch was unable to complete his first run.
