The longest trip of the season awaits the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team this weekend, but it also serves as the most important as the Golden Knights try to lock up spots with solid showings at the USCSA Eastern Regionals, held at Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley, Maine.

This weekend's results will help the Golden Knights qualify on an individual or team basis for the USCSA National Championships in mid-March. Fewer spots are available this season, making the margin for error much slimmer compared to recent seasons.

The Men: The Golden Knights finished as the runner-up nine times in 10 regular-season MacConnell Division races, with the only stumble coming in the first race of the season. Clarkson has solid depth on the men's side as the team is unfazed by the occasional 'DNF' even from its top performers. Freshman Gavin Ebert finished third in the MacConnell Division standings, placing second twice with his lowest finish seventh (discounting two DNFs), but he will miss the regionals this weekend, forcing others on the team to step up. Sophomore Edouard Brochu was eighth overall and fifth in giant slalom events, ending up in the top 10 on eight occasions and in the top five four times. Unlike most of his teammates, Jackson Knobloch was better in slalom races this year, finishing with the ninth-place total in points in those races and 12th overall. Aleksa Lalic also earned all-star honors by taking 14th overall, including the 11th-best figure for the giant slalom. The coaching staff had some difficult decisions in rounding out the team for its final spots, but ended up choosing James Tucker (16th) and Reed Martin (17th), both barely missing out on MacConnell Division All-Star status.

The Women: Clarkson has had some untimely falls that have put the Golden Knights in third place in the MacConnell Division this year, with finishes ranging from second place to fourth place. Senior Hannah Goetz has been the most consistent for the Green and Gold, finishing eighth overall in the Mac Division standings, including a sixth-place finish for the giant slalom. Classmates Ariana Welter and Elyse Donaghue, finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the conference standings to earn all-star honors along with Goetz, and each has come away with a giant slalom victory this winter. First-year collegian LilyAnn Fisher had a solid start to the year when she placed in the top five among Mac Division skiers in the first race of the season, but following a DNF on day two she has not appeared in a race since. That will change this weekend as she returns to compete in both events. Clarkson has relied upon the relative newcomers to close out team scores when Welter or Donaghue have faltered, including freshman Parker Seitzer (23rd) and sophomore Lily Rogers (t-28th). Rogers will take a spot in the giant slalom on Saturday and Seitzer will compete in the slalom race on Sunday.
