Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Soderwall Shines in Knights' Shutout Win Over RPI, 4-0

Potsdam, NY – Shane Soderwall's frequent saves kept the hometown faithful in a frenzy in the second period and the senior goaltender collected his second shutout of the season, helping the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Rensselaer on Saturday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights edged back over .500 on the year at 5-4-1 overall, but more importantly improved to 2-0-0 in ECAC Hockey play with the win, while the Engineers fell to 4-5-1 and 0-3-1. Clarkson will be away from Cheel until the second semester, getting next weekend off before returning to league play at Cornell and Colgate just before the Thanksgiving break.

Shots on target were few and far between in the first period and not many scoring chances came through until the Engineers were whistled for too many men on the ice. Less than 30 seconds into the power play chance for the Knights, Clarkson found the back of the net thanks to a wrister from Remi Gelinas. Tate Taylor had the puck at the left point and then skated to the top of the slot with the puck, allowing Gelinas to replace him in the same spot. It was from there that Gelinas took a step forward with the puck and ripped a shot from the top of the left circle, giving Clarkson a 1-0 lead at 13:23.

Shortly thereafter, Clarkson was called for a penalty, giving the Engineers a chance to knot the game up. RPI had a couple of shots on net that were easily denied by Shane Soderwall, two of five saves that the Clarkson goaltender had in a stretch of three minutes, while making just one other save in the rest of that opening period.

Clarkson was called for another penalty at the end of the first period, putting the Knights down a skater at the start of the second. Much like the first penalty kill, the Knights limited any chances by the Engineers, with one shot getting blocked and one more stopped by Soderwall. Clarkson enjoyed a 21-12 lead in overall shot attempts despite the even 6-6 in shots on goal, but it was RPI controlling the second with plenty of offensive zone time. The best save of the game came near the midway point where Shane Soderwall made one stop on the left side and then quickly slid across to the other side of the net, gloving a shot off a crashing Harrison Lodewyk while sprawling hard and limiting the scoring chance without another rebound. RPI ended the period with a 34-9 advantage in shots and an 18-6 lead in shots on goal as Soderwall was busy wowing the crowd while also giving the Knights' coaching staff several sighs of relief, especially during a five-minute major that was killed off to close out the frame.

The Golden Knights gave their goalie some breathing space and room for error, if necessary, with a pair of goals early in the third period. The first came on a 3-on-2 where Remi Gelinas carried the puck into the zone with Justin Cote hanging a few strides behind. Gelinas dropped the pass to Cote who spun a patented one-timer from the left circle to make it 2-0 at 1:09. Only 43 seconds later while the previous goal still being announced over the sound system, the Knights added another. Jared Mangan collected a loose puck in the slot and rifled a shot on net. That attempt was denied, but Sebastien Gervais was there for the rebound and he tapped it in at 1:52 for a 3-0 Clarkson advantage.

Clarkson capped off its strong third period with an insurance goal in the final six minutes. Gervais battled for the puck along the right side boards near the corner, and once the puck had slipped out a bit, Gervais capitalized by sending a perfect pass into the slot to locate Remi Gelinas in stride for wrist shot that beat Nate Krawchuk on his stick side at 13:53.

Fittingly, the final two minutes of the game allowed Soderwall to shine even more as the Golden Knights had to end the game on the penalty kill. For the final 1:58, Clarkson's penalty kill did the job once more and Soderwall backboned the effort, ending the game with 31 saves.

RPI concluded the contest with a 31-30 lead in shots on goal and a 61-54 advantage in total shots as Clarkson controlled the third period to counteract the Engineers' dominance of the second. Krawchuk finished the game with 25 saves for RPI.
