Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Rally From Two Goal Deficit to Beat UMass Lowell, 3-2

Lowell, MA – Sophomore Adrian Misaljevic scored twice and Remi Gelinas produced the game-winner midway through the third period as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team recorded three unanswered goals to complete a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over UMass Lowell on Friday night.

The Golden Knights opened the season with the win and will be challenged on Saturday by ninth-ranked Providence, which opened its season with a 6-2 victory over St. Lawrence.

Both UMass Lowell and Clarkson had a power play chance in the first five minutes of the contest, with the River Hawks getting one only 70 seconds into the game and Clarkson securing an opportunity at 3:48. Neither team put much together offensively despite the extra skater as Lowell's only chance was blocked and the Knights only shot going wide.

The Knights had trouble getting extended time in the Lowell defensive zone while the River Hawks proved opportunistic, scoring midway through the opening period. A turnover in the neutral zone created a 2-on-1 chance for the home team as Jak Vaarwerk skated into the left circle and sent a pass to the opposite spot for Libor Nemec, who ripped a one-timer in to make it 1-0 at 8:27.

Nine minutes later, Lowell scored a second goal right off the faceoff from the left circle as Dalyn Wakely's win on the draw went back to the stick of Jacob MacDonald. He took know time in putting a shot on net, and the off-balance puck was able to sneak past Shane Soderwall at 17:10.

Clarkson spent much of the final two minutes of the opening period putting pressure on the Lowell defense and was able to take some momentum into the first intermission when the team scored with 36 seconds left. Zack Sandhu took a shot from the left point that was denied by Austin Elliott of Lowell, but he was unable to secure the rebound. A flurry of attempts in front of the goal eventually pushed the puck to Adrian Misaljevic at the far post and he knocked it in to put the score at 2-1.

Only nine total shots on goal were attempted between the two teams in the first period and that total only jumped by 12 more in the second as the gritty battle continued in the middle frame. Clarkson was the lone team to score in the second, evening the game up late in the period on a seemingly harmless shot by Talon Sigurdson. Near the blue line Sigurdson sent a shot towards the goal and the Knights utilized a deflection by Misaljevic and some extra screens to beat Elliott at the 17:45 mark, tying the contest at 2-2.

Lowell had a late power play chance where Soderwall stood tall on a couple of occasions, including an impressive pad save in a 1-on-1 with Nemec right in front of the crease, keeping the score 2-2 with 11.7 seconds left in the middle stanza.

The final period of regulation saw Soderwall make some significant saves in the early going before an elbowing penalty became a major following review, giving the Knights a five-minute power play beginning at 6:37. Clarkson utilized that long run to score a goal more than three minutes into the power play. The Knights held the puck for an extended stretch with passing along the perimeter of the zone before Owen Van Steensel began to skate closer, drawing the Lowell defense closer. Once they collapsed on Van Steensel, he sent a pass across the ice to Remi Gelinas for a one-timer at 9:48, making it 3-2.

A few moments after the conclusion of the five-minute major, the Knights were whistled for a penalty, giving the Hawks a chance to even things up. Soderwall made a blocker save and then another stop a few seconds later to keep Clarkson in the lead. Down the stretch, the two teams gained some extra skating space with matching penalties creating a 4-on-4 and Lowell made an impressive rush in the final minute, beginning with a shot by Kuzma Voronin that went just wide. Lowell kept the puck in the Clarkson zone, but Soderwall made two huge saves, including a glove stop late to give the Knights the victory.

Both teams posted low shots on goal totals in the game as Clarkson had 20 on the frame and Lowell posted 17 on goal. The Knights finished 1-for-4 on the power play and Lowell was held scoreless in its three chances. Soderwall had 15 stops for the Knights and Elliott posted 17 saves for the Hawks.
