Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Suffer 6-2 Defeat to Niagara

Potsdam, NY – Puck luck was not on the side of the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Knights nearly doubled up Niagara in shots on goal but nevertheless suffered a 6-2 loss to the Purple Eagles in the second game of the series at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights slipped below .500 at 3-4-1 on the season while Niagara edged above it at 5-4-1. Clarkson begins ECAC Hockey play next weekend when it hosts Union College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Cheel.

Niagara built an early lead with three goals in a two-minute stretch midway through the opening period. The first came off a faceoff win on the left side as the puck went backwards and one simple pass to Theo Lemieux allowed his wrist shot to get through, bouncing off the post and then off the back of Clarkson goaltender Ben Gaudreau at 11:48. A minute later, the Eagles pounced again, this time gaining possession off an attempted clear that did not have enough pace to leave the zone. A shot from the right point was redirected by Adam Gionta at 12:48 to make the score 2-0. Sixty-seven seconds later it was Jacob Maillet with the goal as he stuffed in a blind pass that went off a skate just outside of the crease at 13:55.

The Purple Eagles added a fourth goal early on in the second period, again right off the faceoff. The puck came back to Mitchell Young at the right point, and he was able to walk into space at the top of the slot for a wrist shot that found space at 5:30.

Clarkson could have produced a pair of goals early in the second only to be denied by Charles-Edward Gravel. The first came off an odd bounce that had Gravel in the trapezoid behind the net when the puck leaked out to Jared Mangan. Gravel leapt across the crease to deny Mangan's shot in a highlight reel save. Later, Gravel had Remi Gelinas looking skyward wondering how his shot did not go in, as he had a shot in the slot during a power play nabbed by a fast glove.

The Knights would eventually get on the scoreboard late in the period to cut the deficit to three when Hayden Reid stole a puck along the boards on the right side. Reid quickly took a shot and a tip in off that attempt from Sebastien Gervais made it 4-1.

Niagara put the game away in the third period, scoring at 3:43 when Ryan Humphrey crashed the net on the right side only to be denied by Shane Soderwall. Unfortunately for the Knights, the officials did not see Alix Durocher kick the puck in from just outside the crease. The Purple Eagles added one more with five minutes to go off a 3-on-1. Jack Richard ripped a shot off the post and the rebound went right to the stick of Dallon Melin for a 6-1 lead.

Clarkson scored one more goal late in the contest while skating 4-on-4 as Tyler Wallace slung the puck from behind the net and in front. The puck was tipped away by a Niagara stick, but it went right to Justin Cote, who flipped the puck in at 16:45 to finish off the scoring for both teams.

Clarkson finished the game with a 34-19 lead in shots on goal, including a 28-10 edge over the final 40 minutes of the contest. Gravel ended with 32 saves while Gaudreau had six stops and Soderwall made seven saves for the Knights.
