Manness Sisters Combine for Four Goals in Clarkson 5-1 Win Over Prodidence

Potsdam, NY – Kate Manness and Sara Manness each scored twice as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team posted its fifth straight win with a 5-1 victory over Providence College on Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-2 on the season while Providence fell to 3-4. The two teams will play once again on Saturday afternoon, with the initial puck drop set for 3:00 pm.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard early with a goal just four minutes into the contest as Kate Manness recorded the first of her two goals on the evening. The puck worked from the goal line to the left point and went to the opposite point for Manness. She then took one step in and picked her spot, going stick side top shelf to make it 1-0.

The Knights finished with a 16-6 edge in shots on goal and each team had eight shots that were off the mark in the first period.

Clarkson increased its lead by two in short order once the second period started as Sara Manness picked up two quick goals. Just 21 seconds into the second, Kate Manness and Manon Le Scodan combined to help break Sara Manness free for a 1-on-1 with the Providence goaltender, and Manness finished with a backhand to make it 2-0. Roughly four minutes later, the Knights picked up another goal on a nice defensive play in front by Le Scodan. Jessie Pellerin took an initial shot from the slot which was blocked and a Providence defender picked up the loose puck in front. Le Scodan then used a simple stick check to release the puck and it slid to the stick of Sara Manness who was alone on the right side of the crease to finish off the play.

Providence got back into the game with a goal near the midway point of the period. There was a turnover in the Friars' defensive zone gave Providence a unique opportunity. Audrey Knapp was the last player to enter the zone and when the loose puck found its way to the top of the slot, Knapp had space to skate on a lengthy breakaway in the other direction, scoring unassisted at 10:53 to make it 3-1.

Clarkson closed things out in the third with a pair of insurance goals only 29 seconds apart. Though the set up was not the same, the shot and result was the same for Kate Manness, as she once again used a pinpoint shot over the right shoulder of the Providence goalie to make it 4-1 at 10:45. Twenty-nine seconds later it was Layla Matthew keeping possession behind the Friars net after a 2-on-2, and she waited for Keira Hurry to fill the lane, wristing a shot from the right line of the left circle at 11:14.

The Knights finished with a 33-22 lead in shots on goal (57-41 in total shots). Neither team scored on the power play, the Friars going 0-for-2 and Clarkson 0-for-1. Kalia Pharand had 21 saves for the Knights and Mallory Hartl posted 28 saves for Providence.
