Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Blanked at Ninth-Ranked Providence

Providence, RI – A four-goal second period by the ninth-ranked Providence Friars put the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team in a hole from which it could not come out, as the Golden Knights suffered a 4-0 defeat on Saturday evening in Rhode Island.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 1-1 on the season while Providence remained unbeaten at 2-0. Clarkson is at home next weekend with back-to-back contests against Canisius University.

The first period, for the most part, belonged to the Golden Knights, as the team had an 18-14 edge in total shots and 8-6 advantage in shots on goal despite being down a player for two minutes due to a penalty. Clarkson had two small breakaway chances, including a very good chance near the midway point of the frame when Conyr Hellyer's shot was denied on the stickside of Providence goaltender Jack Parsons. During the power play later in the period, Providence had three shots, one going wide, another stopped center mass by Shane Soderwall, and the other hitting the post.

Things tilted towards the Providence offensive end in the second period, thanks largely to four penalties whistled on the Golden Knights, as the Friars had a 17-8 lead in shots on goal, with four finding the back of the net. The first goal of the period came in the opening five minutes when Julius Sumpf lifted the puck from the end line towards center ice for Jonathan Fauchon. His attempt towards the goal was broken up by a pair of Clarkson defenders, but Blake Zielinski was following the play and picked up the loose puck and had a wrister at 4:17 to make it 1-0.

Providence then scored three times in a span of 95 seconds, the first on the power play when Ryder Cali knocked in a loose puck at the crease after shots from Sumpf and John Mustard at 9:29. Less than a minute later, the Friars scored again after another long offensive push in the Clarkson zone, as Beau Jelsma dug the puck out of the right side boards and sent a centering feed to Cade Christenson in the slot where he was open for a wrist shot at 10:22. Forty-two seconds later, Will Elger did a good job on a 1-on-2 push with a toe drag and then kept his skates moving after a shot was later stopped by Soderwall, streaking through the slot to flip the puck in as it trickled through the crease, making it 4-0 at 11:04.

Clarkson closed out the period on the power play and had another chance early in the third when Providence was called for a slash, but the Knights' were unable to get on the board. Despite a few penalties called in the third period, the pace of play seemed to be somewhat slowed as the teams dialed up the defense and the physicality. Each team posted more than 10 shots on goal in the final period, but neither was able to find the back of the net.

Providence closed with a lead in shots (69-53) and shots on goal (36-26), aided by its 1-for-7 performance on the power play against just two man-advantage chances for the Knights. Soderwall finished with 32 saves and Parsons posted 25 saves for the Friars.
