Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Tigers Upend Knights, 3-1

Potsdam, NY – Taking advantage of extra ice and vacated creases, Princeton scored while 4-on-4, on the power play, and then an empty netter at the conclusion to down the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team 3-1 on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights saw their record drop to 11-14-2 and 5-8-2 in ECAC Hockey play while Princeton crept up with key points to move to 12-8-1 and 8-5-0. Clarkson looks to get back on track when it hosts Quinnipiac on Saturday evening.

Off the initial faceoff, the Golden Knights were tilting the ice towards their offensive zone as Owen Van Steensel, Jared Mangan, and Luka Sukovic each had solid chances at the Princeton goal, with Conor Callaghan making saves off the shots by Van Steensel and Sukovic. The best chance for the Knights came about six minutes after Sukovic's shot was a post hit by Ty Brassington while the Green and Gold were on the power play, but both Clarkson and Princeton closed out the first period without a score. Princeton nearly got on the board late, but Shane Soderwall made a sliding save to his right and then did a good job of pushing aside a redirect in the final minute. Although Clarkson had 16 shots to the Tigers' 12 in the first period, Princeton's attempts were more often on target, as shots on goal leaned to the visitors 8-5.

The second period began with a 4-on-4 thanks to the teams trading roughing penalties at the end of the first frame. Princeton would take advantage of the extra space on the ice as David Jacobs was able to hold on to the puck behind the Clarkson net. He patiently waited for his teammates to cycle around and sent a backdoor feed to Christopher Reiniger on the right side, and Reiniger converted with a one-timer just 51 seconds into the second.

Through the first portion of the second period, Princeton limited Clarkson's legit chances on the Tigers' goal, but that would change as the Knights loosened up the defense. The Tigers had multiple chances on the power play in the second period, but Princeton only put two total shots on goal while up a skater.

The Tigers took advantage of a penalty at the start of the third period when the Knights were whistled for hooking. Right off the faceoff the puck worked to the left point and then a pass went to the goal line. The tic-tac-toe goal was finished off on a one-timer from the left dot by Jaxson Ezman, with assists going to David Jacobs and Christopher Reiniger, at 1:15.

Near the middle part of the period, Clarkson began to assert itself offensively with a couple of decent chances, and shortly after the media timeout ended, the Knights were able to capitalize on the momentum built prior to the break. Conor Callaghan lost his stick, making it easier for the Knights when Owen Van Steensel took his first shot in the slot. Callaghan made the stop on the first attempt, but without a stick to corral the puck and cover it up, Ryan Bottrill took advantage by knocking in the rebound at 11:35.

Clarkson had its chances in the final four minutes, skating up a player due to a power play and then pulling relief goaltender Keenan Rancier with a little under two minutes remaining for a 6-on-5, but it was Princeton that would put the game away with 30 seconds remaining when Brendan Gorman scored on the empty net.

Shane Soderwall finished with 21 saves in a little over 40 minutes of play before exiting early in the third period with an apparent injury, and Rancier finished with four stops down the stretch. Callaghan ended up with 23 stops for the Tigers, as Princeton won the shot battle 28-24 in terms of attempts on goal, while the Knights were up in total shots 49-47.
