Box Score
Potsdam, NY – Rallying from a two-score deficit, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team received a goal in the last six minutes of regulation from freshman Jace Letourneau to help the Golden Knights gain a 3-3 tie against sixth-ranked Quinnipiac in ECAC Hockey action Saturday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights moved to 11-14-3 overall and 5-8-3 in ECAC play, while Quinnipiac saw its record go to 20-5-3 and 11-2-1. Clarkson hosts RPI and Union next weekend.

Clarkson was able to pick up the extra mark in the standings, winning the shootout over the Bobcats, 3-2.

The two teams traded penalties in the early going with the Golden Knights killing off an early high stick whistle and then going on the power play themselves a few minutes later when the Bobcats were called for tripping. Clarkson got on the scoreboard first thanks to that infraction, but it took some time for the goal to be validated when Quinnipiac wanted a review for offsides. Clarkson battled an aggressive penalty kill from the Bobcats in their own defensive end, but it helped create space when the Knights were able to beat the checks in the neutral zone. Talon Sigurdson collected a pass near the point and slid further in, eventually take a wrister from the high slot that beat Quinnipiac goaltender Dylan Silverstein high on his stick side, making it 1-0 at 11:29.

The Bobcats would even things up early on in a five-minute major near the conclusion of the first period. Quinnipiac worked the puck around the perimeter looking for daylight and it eventually settled on the stick of Antonin Verreault. Instead of trying to send a pass to the opposite post, Verreault held the puck and waited for a screen to develop, choosing to go five-hole when the opportunity came, to tie the game 1-1 at 18:40.

The Bobcats still had nearly three minutes of power play time to start the second period, and they needed it all of it to score another goal. With only a handful of seconds remaining on the power play, Quinnipiac had time for one last rush, starting from the neutral zone and ending when Aaron Schwartz converting in the slot just a second after the 5-on-4 ended, but before the final Clarkson skater could join the play.

Clarkson was whistled for a delay of game after a warning and Quinnipiac took advantage of the free opportunity. Just after the faceoff, Verreault claimed possession near the goal line at the right circle and he ripped a pass to the opposite circle where Ethan Wyttenbach was waiting for a one-timer from the dot, scoring just six seconds into the power play, putting the tally at 3-1 at 4:41.

Despite the frequent calls against them, the Knights would not give up in the latter half of the period, eventually getting back to within one late in the stanza. With just over four minutes to go, Matthew Mayich delivered a pass to Owen Van Steensel at the left circle, and Van Steensel rifled a shot onto the Quinnipiac goal. Silverstein made the initial save for the Bobcats, but was unable to hold on to the puck, allowing Mayich to crash the net and knock it in at 4:06 for a 3-2 game.

Clarkson was particularly busy in the third period taking shots in hopes of tying the game. One of those came through with just under six minutes remaining in the contest. The Knights had a rush that pulled Silverstein well out of the goal on a couple of occasions, the first time at the top of the crease and then a second time at his right post as he tried to remove any angles from Justin Cote's shot. Cote did challenge Silverstein, but the rebound went right to Jace Letourneau, who had all kinds of space to take a shot, putting the puck into the open net at 14:22 to knot the game 3-3.

During the overtime session, Quinnipiac had a pair of decent chances, the first coming early off the stick of Andon Cerbone with Soderwall making a save with his shoulder, and a second two minutes later when Soderwall squeezed a shot near the right post. The last minute saw both teams with odd-man rushes, but neither could convert and the shootout was required for the extra hash mark in the standings.

Quinnipiac won the battle of shots (61-53) and shots on goal (26-24), though the overtime session is what caused the Golden Knights narrow deficit. The Bobcats went 2-for-6 on the power play while Clarkson was 1-for-2. Soderwall had 23 saves for Clarkson and Silverstein had 21 stops for Quinnipiac.
