Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Tie 10th-Ranked Dartmouth, 2-2

Hanover, NH – Both goaltenders were strong all night and the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team advanced to overtime for the first time this year, tying Dartmouth College 2-2 on Friday evening at Thompson Arena.

The Golden Knights moved to 11-1-1 and 5-5-1 in ECAC Hockey, while Dartmouth pushed its mark to 13-4-1 and 7-2-1. The Big Green and Clarkson went to the shootout, where it took seven rounds before anyone could score as Nikita Nikora hit the glove of Shane Soderwall, but it had enough juice behind it to flutter into the back of the net providing the home team with the extra point.

Considering how long it took for either team to score during the shootout, it was somewhat surprising that two-plus hours earlier Dartmouth was able to score before most of the fans had even taken their seats. Nikita Nikora had the puck on the right side and dropped a pass off for Colin Grable a stride or two inside the blue line. Grable's shot was wristed towards goal and Jack Silverberg cleverly put his stick in front of the shot just outside the crease, and his blade redirected the puck enough to slip past Clarkson goalie Shane Soderwall at 1:04 in the first period.

Clarkson rallied with three chances within a stretch of 30 seconds, two from Talon Sigurdson and another on a shot from Owen Van Steensel in the slot, but Dartmouth's Emmett Croteau was up to the task each time to keep the Knights off the board. Only a few minutes later, a take down from behind resulted in a delayed penalty and a penalty shot for Nathan Morin. What could have been disastrous for the Knights, a potential two-goal deficit only eight minutes into the game, instead was a sigh of relief when Moran was stuffed by Soderwall at the far post. Morin skated in on the right side and tried to maneuver his way through the slot only to see Soderwall slide over and eliminate any low angle attempt by the post.

The Golden Knights won the second period in every metric, outshooting Dartmouth 14-7 in the middle 20 minutes, but most importantly lit the lamp twice. On the power play just a few short minutes into the period, Tristan Sarsland wristed a shot from above the right circle and towards the slot, beating Croteau on his glove side at 2:38 with assists going to Jared Mangan and Owen Van Steensel. Clarkson gathered a gift-wrapped goal at 13:37 to take the lead late in the second period. Ryan Bottrill was fighting for the puck with a Dartmouth player below the goal line on the right side boards when the puck leaked out to another Big Green player. A misconnect turned into a freebie for the Knights as the attempted pass or clear found the tape of Remi Gelinas, and the freshman would not allow Dartmouth time to recover or react, quickly wristing a shot for an unassisted marker and a 2-1 Clarkson advantage.

Dartmouth tied the game just a few second into a power play in the first handful of minutes in the third period. The Big Green won the faceoff and Jack Silverberg tapped a puck over to Hayden Stavroff near the left circle. Stavroff went to the point for CJ Foley but immediately received a pass back, winding up for a hard slapshot before the defense could readjust and shift to his side, sneaking the puck past Soderwall at 5:42 and tying the game 2-2.

Following the media timeout, each team had solid bids to take the lead, Clarkson's coming first and then Soderwall standing tall at the other end of the ice to maintain the knot. After a hand pass on a faceoff was whistled with just over two minutes remaining in the game, Clarkson found itself needing to kill off a penalty before the overtime would come. The Knights defense was solid, not providing any good chances for Dartmouth and forcing the game to the extra session.

In overtime, each team had one grade 'A' opportunity. Jared Mangan ripped a shot from the high slot 90 seconds in and the puck whistled past the Dartmouth goal only to take a hard bounce off the boards and almost deflect off Croteau's skates and in the net, but the puck was flipped away by a Dartmouth defender. With just 90 seconds remaining in the overtime it was Dartmouth's turn, but CJ Foley's shot on the right post was denied by Soderwall's pad and glove to end the threat.

Clarkson won the battle of shots 51-47, but had a larger lead in shots on goal at 29-19.
