Late Power Play Goal Halts Knights Unbeaten Run at Seven Games

Cambridge, MA – A power play goal in the final minutes turned out to be the difference, as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team's seven-game unbeaten streak came to an end in a 2-1 defeat against Harvard University on Saturday evening.

The Golden Knights saw their record dip back below .500 at 11-12-1 overall and the mark in ECAC Hockey play went to 5-6-1, while Harvard improved to 9-7-1 and 7-4-0. Clarkson plays a pair of games against Route 11 rival St. Lawrence University next weekend, the first coming on home ice at Cheel Arena on Friday.

Although the Green and Gold carried the play for much of the third period, including a game-tying goal in the first 30 seconds of the final stanza, it was a power play goal from Casey Severo at 17:45 in the third that proved to be the difference.

The Golden Knights found themselves on their heels in the first minute of the contest after an early penalty was called, putting Harvard on the power play. Fortunately, for the Green and Gold, there would be no good chances at the cage, with the lone shot actually coming at the other end off the stick of Talon Sigurdson. Though there were plenty of shots through the first period, not many challenged either goaltender. It wasn't until there about five minutes left in the frame that either team came up with a good scoring chance. Clarkson was the first when a centering feed found Ryan Bottrill right in the slot, but his shot hit the pads of Harvard's Ben Charette at 14:25. Less than a minute later, it was Chase Stefanek who nearly tallied for the Crimson. His first attempt was a tip that was stuffed by Shane Soderwall, but the rebound found Stefanek's stick again, only to have Soderwall deny the backhand on his left side.

Clarkson opened the second period with a prolonged stretch of possession in its offensive end, but as soon as Harvard escaped the predicament it was able to get on the board. Heikki Ruohonen went in on the right side and put on the brakes before moving laterally through the ice and into the middle where he ripped a wristshot over the stick of Shane Soderwall at 0:53, with assists going to Richard Gallant and Matthew Morden.

It seemed as if that early goal might get things going, but the offensive continuity and extensive playmaking, but neither team was able to light the lamp for the rest of the second period. However, that changed quickly in the third when the Knights finally broke through only 21 seconds in. Remi Gelinas sent the puck towards Tristan Sarsland, and though the pass may have ended up being a little too far ahead had it not been deflected, the puck went off Mason Langenbrunner and was in a perfect spot for the tap in by Sarsland.

Clarkson kept on buzzing for the next few minutes and it looked like the Knights may have scored while on the power play off a shot from Owen Van Steensel. However, upon review, the puck not only clanged off the far post, but somehow avoided the back of Charette, where it easily could have been knocked in before another reaction came from the goaltender.

The Knights had a solid penalty kill in the middle of the third period, but a second whistle late in the contest set up the game-winner for Harvard. The Crimson didn't have much going in the first half of the power play, but eventually the puck worked around the outside and then went down low to Ruohonen near the post at the right circle. He tried a backhand that was stuffed off Soderwall's pad, but the rebound found its way to the stick of Casey Severo at 17:45.

Clarkson spent its final two minutes without goalie in an attempt to tie the game. The first try in the final minute was an attempted redirect by Sarsland on the doorstep of the goal, and 25 seconds later Tate Taylor's shot was just wide. In the waning seconds, Erik Bargholtz flung one more shot on the net, but the shot made a loud thud against the pads of Charette and went into the corner where the game ended.

The Knights had a large advantage in total shots at 63-40, but the two teams were tied in shots on goal at 28-28. Soderwall finished with 26 saves and Charette had 27 stops for Harvard.
