Knights Comeback Several Times for 5-5 Tie Versus SLU

Potsdam, NY – Three power play goals, including two in the final 10 minutes of the contest, helped the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team salvage a 5-5 tie against Route 11 rival St. Lawrence University on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 11-12-2 overall and 5-6-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Saints pushed their mark to 2-20-3 and 1-11-1. St. Lawrence picked up the extra hash in the standings by winning in the shootout, scoring the only goal in a fifth try, this one coming off the stick of Isaac Tremblay.

The two teams will meet once again on Saturday evening, this time down the road at Appleton Arena in Canton.

The Knights had a strong first period in which they limited St. Lawrence's chance with an 11-4 edge in shots on goal and a 19-6 advantage in shots overall, but it was the Saints that got out to an early lead. Sam LeDrew had a very tough angle for a shot near the bottom of the right circle, but he took it nevertheless, and it snuck through the left shoulder of Shane Soderwall and the post, somehow finding space to make it 1-0 at 9:38.

Although the first period was relatively quiet through first 20 minutes, the teams made up for that slow start with six combined goals in the middle frame. The first came in the opening minute, when Ryan Bottrill skated from the left circle into the slot and went high on the glove-side of Saints' goaltender Cameron Smith, making it 1-1 at 0:53.

A penalty was whistled with just under seven minutes expired in the period and both teams were able to score no special teams. St. Lawrence picked up the first goal while shorthanded, rolling the other way off a defensive zone draw for a 3-on-3. It was slow in the creation, but a tough angle attempt went off the pad of Soderwall and found the stick of Luke Santilli, as he backhanded the rebound in at 6:55. Clarkson scored only 36 seconds later when Justin Cote ripped a wristshot from the high slot at 7:31 to tie the game up, 2-2.

The Saints went back up by a goal while on the power play, very late in the extra skater opportunity. A wristshot was taken from above the right circle near the slot and the attempt somehow made it through traffic where Rasmus Svartstrom was able to tip the puck past Soderwall at 11:07. A little under four minutes later, Clarkson tied the game for a third time in the period when Owen Van Steensel knocked in the puck for his eighth goal of the year. After a pair of shots were stopped by the Saints, it looked like SLU was going the other way, but Van Steensel stole the puck with a reach from behind, sliding the puck into the empty spot in the crease at 15:54.

St. Lawrence went back up one more time just two minutes later. Jack Babbage took a shot from between the blue line and the left circle, but it caught a lot of stick from Isaac Tremblay, enough that it slowed up considerably and fluttered over the head of Soderwall and into the back of the net at 17:35.

Scoring did not slow by much in the third period, but the first tally of the frame made it appear as if SLU might be able to run away with a win on the road. The Saints created a 2-on-1 with a defensive zone turnover, creating a transition opportunity. Cooper Pierson came down the left side wall and Svartstrom filled the lane, making for an easy opportunity in the slot at 8:52, making it 5-3.

A power play, starting after a holding penalty and the media timeout, quickly resulted in a goal for the Knights, drawing Clarkson back within one. The Green and Gold won the faceoff and Jared Mangan found Owen Van Steensel for a one-timer, as the freshman ripped a shot from one knee and into the net at 10:10. Another penalty less than two minutes later again gave Clarkson an excellent chance to tie the contest, and the Green and Gold took advantage. The goal was created by Tate Taylor as he kept the puck in the zone on the right side with his skate. After receiving a return pace, Taylor skated down to the bottom of the right circle, drawing a defender and creating some space, as his pass whipped to the front of the net for Mael St-Denis where he expertly used the blade of his stick for a tip-in at 12:39, Clarkson's third power-play marker of the contest.

There weren't many chances in overtime, though the Knights looked like they could take the lead with roughly a minute to go, but a diving backhand try near the crease was pushed aside by Smith.

Clarkson had overwhelming advantages everywhere but the scoreboard, winning 46 of 76 faceoff attempts, outshooting the Saints 77-36 overall and also 41-19 in terms of shots on goal. Soderwall ended with 14 saves and Smith had 36 stops.
