A large senior class is looking to go out on a high note in 2025, as the Clarkson University Softball team opens up the 2025 campaign this week with a doubleheader at Middlebury College.

Guided by 12th-year head coach Kristen McGaughey and assistant Sierra Ashley, the Golden Knights roster boasts seven seniors on the 19-player team and plenty of those student-athletes have seen regular playing time since arriving on campus three-and-a-half years ago. With ample veteran leadership, the Golden Knights seek a return to the Liberty League playoffs this spring.

The most significant returning player for the Green and Gold is pitcher/infielder Devin Fitzpatrick, a NFCA Division III Region III First-Team selection as well as a two-time Liberty League First-Team All-Star, was potent at the plate and in the circle for the Knights. Fitzpatrick blasted seven home runs, drove in 27, and slugged .634 to lead the Clarkson offense, while also posting a 2.61 earned run average and 107 strikeouts over 140-plus innings of work. Her seven home runs tied the singe-season mark in Clarkson's 11-year history and she is seeking to become just the third player in program history to reach double figures in career home runs with an eye on the team record (15).

Fitzpatrick will be joined by plenty of classmates in the lineup on a regular basis, though the Knights juniors of a year ago will be seeking better luck in 2025. Two-time conference all-star Zoey Kovach is a .342 career hitter but batted only .250 a year ago despite her highest walk rate and lowest strikeout rate in her career with the Knights. Senior infielder Elizabeth Greco saw her average dip 70 points from the previous season as well, although she, too, had a lower strikeout rate than the previous campaign. Center fielder Emma Sabourin provided strong defense and speed on the bases for the Knights and will also be looking to return to form where she was a Liberty League All-Star as a sophomore. Joining Sabourin in the outfield corners are seniors Elissa Uveino and Bridget Kerwin. Uveino joined the team in the fall of 2022 and has hit above .339 in 69 career plate appearances, and will get a more significant role this season. Kerwin has always been an offensive threat for the Knights as well with 10 extra-base hits in her career, including three home runs. The last of Clarkson's senior members is shortstop Kaya Johnson, a steadying influence in the infield with excellent range and solid glove, posting a .925 fielding percentage from the most difficult spot in the diamond.

Though seniors will get significant time in the field in the lineup, there is ample talent to fill in the gaps and waiting in the wings. Isabel Haspil gained significant experience a year ago mostly in the outfield but she will return to her natural spot in the infield. Joining her on the right side of the dirt is Lexi Rydelek, who will get lots of time at first base. Clarkson has enviable depth at several other positions, too, with junior Karyssa Parker filling in as the fourth outfielder and getting starts and time on the base paths as a pinch-runner.

Newcomers Maddie Throumoulos and Emily Bulone will get opportunities in the infield, as Throumoulos is a talented infielder on the left side of the diamond and Bulone's bat is too valuable to not get frequent plate appearances. Bulone will serve as a catcher and first baseman. Sophomore Genevieve Mucitelli will also get time at third and behind the plate. Kaelyn Buehler, another catcher, and Shaelee Torres will also get time in the outfield.

Joining Fitzpatrick on the pitching staff are junior Lily Corrice as well as Amanda Corrice and Bella Hotchkiss. While Fitzpatrick will likely receive 40% of the innings, all three are more than capable of shutting down opponents.
