Rydelek Homers, McDonald Tosses Complete Game in Clarkson Softball Split Versus Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Lexi Rydelek homered and drove in three for the Clarkson University Softball team as the Golden Knights split with SUNY Potsdam on Monday afternoon, dropping a 5-3 decision in the opener and claiming an abbreviated 9-1 in in game two at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 7-26 on the year while Potsdam saw its record go to 13-21. Clarkson closes out the regular season in Potsdam this weekend when the team hosts Rensselaer in the final Liberty League doubleheader of the campaign.

The Bears jumped on the board early with two runs in the first, two more in the second, and then one in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Maddalyn Wasserman plated a pair single in the first to make it 2-0, a throwing error on a sac bunt scored a third run and a wild pitch sent a fourth run home in the second, and a sac fly from Alexys Rosick in the third accounted for Potsdam's runs.

Clarkson chipped away with a solo home run by Lexi Rydelek in the fourth, her sixth home run of the season, surpassing the five she blasted a year ago. Ivy Borkoski scored on Emily Bulone's RBI single in the fifth and Isabel Haspil doubled home Ryleigh Fontana in the sixth to pull the Knights to within two, but Clarkson was retired in order in the seventh to end the game.

Fontana and Haspil each posted two hits in the opener. Ry Garcia took the loss and Bella Hotchkiss pitched the final 5.2 innings of the game for Clarkson. Sam Horne scattered nine hits and walked one with two strikeouts to earn the win for Potsdam.

In game two, Clarkson put up seven in its second turn at the bat and cruised to the win from there. Isabel Haspil opened the inning with a walk and Genevieve Mucitelli homered to left-center to make it 2-0. Karyssa Parker then reached on an error, Kendall Cuyler singled to left, and Ivy Borkoski singled to right to load the bases. A fielder's choice cut down one would-be run at home, but that did not deter the Knights, as Emily Bulone delivered a sac fly to make it 3-0. Lexi Rydelek then doubled in two and Isabel Haspil followed with a double of her own to drive in two more, putting the tally at 7-0.

The Knights added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Emily Bulone and Lexi Rydelek opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Kelsea Flanagan kept the line moving with a single to right to score pinch-runner Ryleigh Fontana, making it 8-0. The next batter then flew out to shallow right field with Rydelek initially staying close to the third base bag. Flanagan was looking to tag and got caught between the bases in a run down, and a Bears throw to nab her going back to second was enough of an opening for Rydelek to score Clarkson's ninth run.

Potsdam looked to keep the game going in the top of the fifth, putting runners in scoring position after two straight singles and a ground out. Alexys Rosick singled up the middle to score one, but consecutive fly outs to Karyssa Parker in right field ended the contest in five frames.

Clarkson had 10 hits in the second game, but only Borkoski and Rydelek had multi-hit games. Rydelek, Haspil, and Mucitelli each drove in two runs and Rydelek also scored twice. Avery McDonald pitched to contact and was efficient, giving up just six hits in five innings with one lone earned run, but she did not walk any batters or strikeout any hitters. Emily Birmingham took the loss for the Bears, though only four of the nine runs she allowed were earned.
